AL HASEEB MEANING

The Reckoner, who takes account of everything, and the Sufficient, who is enough.

Al-Haseeb counts what the world miscounts and settles what the world leaves unsettled. Every deed, every atom's weight, enters His ledger, and every servant who leans on Him finds that He alone suffices where a world of supporters would not.

Mentions of Al Haseeb

From the Quran & Hadith

Arabic root
ح س بto reckon, count, calculate; to suffice, to be enough; to take account of

From the root ha-sin-ba (ح س ب), which carries two intertwined classical meanings: reckoning, counting, and calculating; and sufficing, being enough. Both live inside Al-Haseeb: He is the One who takes complete account of every deed, and the One who is completely sufficient for whoever relies on Him. Ḥasbī: He is my enough.

Sufficient for whoever relies on Him

The Quran states the sufficiency plainly: 'And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose' (Quran 65:3). And of the Prophet's ﷺ commission: 'O Prophet, sufficient for you is Allah and for whoever follows you of the believers' (Quran 8:64). The words the believers said when armies gathered against them became the ummah's emergency sentence: ḥasbuna-llāhu wa niʿma-l-wakīl, 'Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best Disposer of affairs' (Quran 3:173), the same words Ibrahim (peace be upon him) is reported to have said when thrown into the fire.

Every greeting is counted

The reckoning side of the Name appears in the smallest social detail: 'And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with one better than it or return it in a like manner. Indeed, Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant' (Quran 4:86). If the arithmetic of returned salams is kept, nothing is off the books. On the Day of Judgement, He is 'swift in account' (Quran 24:39), reckoning all creation at once, each soul as if it were His only audit.

From the Quran

Alladhīna qāla lahumu-n-nāsu inna-n-nāsa qad jamaʿū lakum fa-khshawhum fa-zādahum īmānan wa qālū ḥasbuna-llāhu wa niʿma-l-wakīl.

Those to whom people said, Indeed, the people have gathered against you, so fear them. But it merely increased them in faith, and they said, Sufficient for us is Allah, and He is the best Disposer of affairs.

Quran 3:173 (Aal-Imran)
وَمَن يَتَوَكَّلْ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ فَهُوَ حَسْبُهُۥٓ ۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بَـٰلِغُ أَمْرِهِۦ

Wa man yatawakkal ʿala-llāhi fa-huwa ḥasbuh. Inna-llāha bālighu amrih.

And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him. Indeed, Allah will accomplish His purpose.

Quran 65:3 (At-Talaq)

Wa idhā ḥuyyītum bi-taḥiyyatin fa-ḥayyū bi-aḥsana minhā aw ruddūhā. Inna-llāha kāna ʿalā kulli shay'in ḥasībā.

And when you are greeted with a greeting, greet in return with one better than it or return it in a like manner. Indeed, Allah is ever, over all things, an Accountant.

Quran 4:86 (An-Nisa)
Reflection

Bring your accounts to Al-Haseeb before He brings them to you. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) is famously reported to have counseled: take account of yourselves before you are taken to account. A nightly minute of honest reckoning, what did I earn today, what did I damage, keeps the ledger short and the heart soft. And memorize the other half of the Name for the days when everything gathers against you at once: ḥasbuna-llāhu wa niʿma-l-wakīl. People said it facing an army and walked away with grace and bounty. Whatever has gathered against you, deadlines, debts, diagnoses, the arithmetic has not changed: one Sufficient One outweighs every column of troubles.
