From the Quran & Hadith
From the root ha-sad-ya (ح ص ي), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of counting, enumerating, and computing; comprehending a total exhaustively; and recording item by item, as pebbles (ḥaṣā) were once used for counting. Al-Muhsi is the One whose knowledge is itemized: not only knowing all, but knowing all one by one.
Counted them, one by one
The Quran describes His enumeration of all creatures: 'He has enumerated them and counted them a full counting. And all of them are coming to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone' (Quran 19:94-95). Every human who has ever lived is individually registered and will individually arrive. In an age of anonymized billions, this Name insists: you have never been a rounding error.
Deeds recorded that we forgot
'On the Day when Allah will resurrect them all and inform them of what they did. Allah had enumerated it, while they forgot it. And Allah is, over all things, Witness' (Quran 58:6). The forgetting is ours alone. Words tossed away decades ago, small mercies done in passing, wounds inflicted and never registered by the one who inflicted them: all sit itemized. The scale on the Last Day will weigh entries the owners cannot remember writing.
Laqad aḥṣāhum wa ʿaddahum ʿaddā.
“He has enumerated them and counted them a full counting.”
Aḥṣāhu-llāhu wa nasūh. Wa-llāhu ʿalā kulli shay'in shahīd.
“Allah had enumerated it, while they forgot it. And Allah is, over all things, Witness.”
Wa kulla shay'in aḥṣaynāhu fī imāmin mubīn.
“And all things We have enumerated in a clear register.”
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Allah has ninety-nine names, one hundred less one; whoever enumerates them (aḥṣāhā) will enter Paradise.'
The famous hadith of the ninety-nine Names uses this very root: whoever aḥṣā them, enumerates them, not as a parrot counts but as a heart absorbs, enters Paradise. Learning these Names one by one, living with them one by one, is itself an act of iḥṣā, meeting the Enumerator in His own language. And since your days are being itemized anyway, itemize back. Vague intentions produce vague lives; the believer who counts, his prayers, his charity, his words in an argument, walks more carefully than the one living in round numbers. You cannot match His counting, but you can stop living as if nothing counts.
Allāhumma aḥṣi lanā ḥasanātinā wa tajāwaz ʿan sayyi'ātinā
O Allah, count our good deeds for us in full and pass over our misdeeds.
