From the Quran & Hadith
From the root ra-qaf-ba (ر ق ب), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of watching and observing attentively; guarding and keeping an eye upon; and awaiting with vigilance. The raqīb of a caravan was the lookout who never slept on duty. Ar-Raqeeb observes every creature, every moment, with a watchfulness that never blinks and never tires.
The Name that opens the verse of kinship
Surah an-Nisa opens by commanding mindfulness of Allah and of family ties, and seals the command with this Name: 'Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer' (Quran 4:1). The placement teaches where His watching is most tested: in how we treat relatives, spouses, orphans, the people whose rights are easiest to neglect because no human audit is coming. One is always coming.
The handover of Isa
On the Day of Judgement, Isa (peace be upon him) will disown the worship directed at him with words that define this Name: 'I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness' (Quran 5:117). Prophets watch their people for a lifetime; Ar-Raqeeb watches all people for all time. Every human watcher clocks out. He does not.
Wa-ttaqu-llāha-lladhī tasā'alūna bihi wa-l-arḥām. Inna-llāha kāna ʿalaykum raqībā.
“And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer.”
Wa kuntu ʿalayhim shahīdan mā dumtu fīhim. Fa-lammā tawaffaytanī kunta anta-r-Raqība ʿalayhim. Wa anta ʿalā kulli shay'in shahīd.
“And I was a witness over them as long as I was among them; but when You took me up, You were the Observer over them, and You are, over all things, Witness.”
Mā yalfidhu min qawlin illā ladayhi raqībun ʿatīd.
“Man does not utter any word except that with him is an observer prepared to record.”
The scholars of the heart built a whole discipline from this Name: murāqabah, living watched. It is the practical half of ihsan: if you cannot yet worship as though you see Him, hold on to the certainty that He sees you. Practiced for even a day, murāqabah edits a life: messages get rewritten before sending, glances get lowered, the tone with a parent softens mid-sentence. And there is shelter in it, not only discipline. To be watched by Ar-Raqeeb is to be un-abandoned: no injustice against you went unobserved, no patience you practiced in the dark was wasted. The lookout on the caravan of your life has never once left the post.
