From the Quran & Hadith
From the root kaf-ra-mim (ك ر م), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of being generous, giving, and beneficent; being noble and high-minded; and being precious, valued, and honored. Karam in Arabic is generosity that flows from nobility of essence, not from calculation. Al-Kareem gives before being asked, gives more than is asked, and gives to those who never ask at all.
The question written into your creation
Allah asks the heedless a question through this very Name: 'O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous, who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?' (Quran 82:6-7). The subtlety noted by the scholars: He rebukes with His most inviting Name, as if to say, was it My generosity itself that you mistook for absence? Even the rebuke is generous.
Generous beyond need
When the throne of the queen of Saba was brought in the blink of an eye, Sulaiman (peace be upon him) named the reality behind the gift: 'This is from the favor of my Lord to test whether I will be grateful or ungrateful. And whoever is grateful, his gratitude is only for the benefit of himself. And whoever is ungrateful, then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous' (Quran 27:40). His generosity gains nothing from our thanks and loses nothing to our ingratitude; it simply is, like light.
Yā ayyuha-l-insānu mā gharraka bi-rabbika-l-Karīm. Alladhī khalaqaka fa-sawwāka fa-ʿadalak.
“O mankind, what has deceived you concerning your Lord, the Generous, who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?”
Wa man shakara fa-innamā yashkuru li-nafsih, wa man kafara fa-inna rabbī Ghaniyyun Karīm.
“And whoever is grateful, his gratitude is only for the benefit of himself. And whoever is ungrateful, then indeed, my Lord is Free of need and Generous.”
Iqra' wa rabbuka-l-akram.
“Recite, and your Lord is the Most Generous.”
Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Indeed your Lord is Modest and Generous. He is shy, when His servant raises his hands to Him, to return them empty.'
Take the hadith of the raised hands seriously: the Most Generous is described as too noble to send a asking servant away with nothing. You have never lowered your hands truly empty; the answer was placed in them as gift, as protection, or as a stored reward you will find on the Day you need it most. And nobility is contagious by design. Karam in a believer looks like the Name that inspired it: giving without scorekeeping, honoring guests and strangers, covering others' shortfalls quietly, responding to ingratitude with more grace. The Prophet ﷺ, sent by Al-Akram, was the most generous of people; walking behind him in this trait is walking toward the Name.
