AL BARR MEANING

The Source of Goodness, from whom every kindness in creation is poured.

Mentions of Al Barr

From the Quran & Hadith

Arabic root
ب ر رto be kind, gentle, beneficent; devoted goodness; truthfulness kept in kindness

From the root ba-ra-ra (ب ر ر), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of kindness, gentleness, and beneficence; dutiful devotion, as in birru-l-wālidayn, goodness to parents; and faithfulness that keeps its word. Al-Barr is goodness at the source: every kindness in existence is drawn from His, and His beneficence reaches the deserving and undeserving alike.

The testimony of the people of Paradise

The Name's single Quranic appearance is a memory spoken in Paradise: 'Indeed, we used to call upon Him before. Indeed, it is He who is al-Barr, ar-Raheem' (Quran 52:28). Looking back over their whole road, hardships included, the people of Paradise choose this summary: He was kind to us all along. The believer is invited to reach that verdict early, here, mid-road, before the view from the end proves it.

The mathematics of His kindness

The Prophet ﷺ relayed the ledger of Al-Barr: whoever intends a good deed and does not do it, one full good is written; who does it, ten to seven hundred fold; who intends an evil and leaves it, a good is written; who does it, one only (Sahih al-Bukhari 6491). No honest audit reads that scale as anything but tilted, deliberately, lovingly, in our favor. That tilt is Al-Barr's signature on the bookkeeping of your life.

From the Quran
إِنَّا كُنَّا مِن قَبْلُ نَدْعُوهُ ۖ إِنَّهُۥ هُوَ ٱلْبَرُّ ٱلرَّحِيمُ

Innā kunnā min qablu nadʿūh. Innahu huwa-l-Barru-r-Raḥīm.

Indeed, we used to call upon Him before. Indeed, it is He who is the Beneficent, the Merciful.

Quran 52:28 (At-Tur)

Laysa-l-birra an tuwallū wujūhakum qibala-l-mashriqi wa-l-maghribi wa lākinna-l-birra man āmana bi-llāhi wa-l-yawmi-l-ākhir.

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but true righteousness is in one who believes in Allah and the Last Day.

Quran 2:177 (Al-Baqarah)
From the Hadith

An-Nawwas ibn Sam'an (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Birr (righteousness) is good character, and sin is what wavers in your chest and you would hate for people to discover.'

Sahih Muslim 2553
Reflection

Al-Barr has been doing you specific, traceable good since before you could thank anyone: the mother's mercy He placed, the near-misses He absorbed, the sins He screened from public view, the duas He answered better than their wording. The spiritual exercise this Name assigns is simply accounting honestly, and the account always ends in the sentence of the people of Paradise: He was kind to us all along. Then convert the account into conduct. Birr in the Prophet's ﷺ definition is good character, and its first address is parents, then kin, then everyone. Be good to people who cannot repay and did not ask, the way Al-Barr was good to you on exactly those terms.

Calling on Allah by this Name
يَا بَرُّ يَا رَحِيمُ بِرَّكَ نَرْجُو فَلَا تَحْرِمْنَا خَيْرَ مَا عِنْدَكَ بِشَرِّ مَا عِنْدَنَا

Yā Barru yā Raḥīm, birraka narjū falā taḥrimnā khayra mā ʿindaka bi-sharri mā ʿindanā

O Beneficent, O Merciful, Your goodness we hope for; do not deny us the best of what is with You because of the worst of what is with us.
