From the root ʿayn-lam-waw (ع ل و), shared with Al-Aliyy, in the form of ongoing intensity: Al-Mutaali is exaltedness ever-renewing, supremely above every ceiling thought can build. However high understanding climbs, He is above that; above the above, endlessly.
Exalted above what they associate
The Quran wields this Name's root against every degrading theology: 'Exalted is He and high above (taʿālā) what they associate with Him' (Quran 10:18, 16:1). Al-Mutaali is the standing rebuttal: above needing a son, above partners, above fatigue, forgetfulness, injustice, and every human projection. Subḥānahu wa taʿālā, the phrase the ummah attaches to His mention, is this Name practiced in passing.
With the Grand, over the unseen
Its single occurrence as a Name comes in majesty's full dress: 'Knower of the unseen and the witnessed, the Grand, the Supremely Exalted' (Quran 13:9). Exaltation joined to total knowledge: He is not above in the sense of away, uninformed of the low; He is above while knowing every detail of below. Transcendence without absence, the balance false religions always lose one side of.

Every generation shrinks God toward its own image: a tribal champion, a cosmic vending machine, a projection of the age's politics. Al-Mutaali is the permanent revolt against all shrinkage. Whatever you have understood of Him, He is above that, which keeps worship forever humble and forever fresh: the summit recedes as you climb, and the climbing is the point. Practically, the Name is armor for your standards. The person who orients to the Supremely Exalted refuses the low ceilings offered daily: pettiness in conflict, cheapness in ambition, vulgarity in speech. Taʿālaw, come up higher, is the Quran's invitation verb. Answer it a little every day.
