The Praiseworthy, deserving of all praise by what He is, not only by what He gives.
Al-Hameed is the One all praise travels toward. Every tongue that has ever praised anything, beauty, kindness, skill, sunsets, was praising, knowingly or not, some trace of His work. The first word of the Fatihah, al-ḥamdu lillāh, files all of it correctly.

From the root ha-mim-dal (ح م د), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of praising and speaking well of with love, honor, and gratitude together. Ḥamd differs from mere thanks: shukr responds to a favor received, while ḥamd praises the excellence of the one praised whether or not you received anything. Al-Hameed is praiseworthy in Himself, praised before creation existed and praised if no one praises.
Rich beyond needing our praise
The Quran repeatedly pairs this Name with Al-Ghaniyy, the Free of Need: 'And whoever is grateful is grateful for the benefit of himself. And whoever denies, then indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy' (Quran 31:12). The pairing removes any suspicion that praise is demanded for His benefit. Mankind's ingratitude subtracts nothing: 'If you disbelieve, you and everyone on the earth entirely, indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy' (Quran 14:8). We are commanded to praise because praise is true, and because saying true things about Allah heals the sayer.
The praise that fills the scale
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Purity is half of faith, and al-ḥamdu lillāh fills the scale' (Sahih Muslim 223). One phrase, four syllables, and the scale of deeds is filled, because ḥamd is the summary of correct existence: creature acknowledging Creator, gift acknowledging Giver. The people of Paradise close on the same word: 'and the last of their call will be: al-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi-l-ʿālamīn' (Quran 10:10).
In takfurū antum wa man fi-l-arḍi jamīʿan fa-inna-llāha la-Ghaniyyun Ḥamīd.
“If you disbelieve, you and whoever is on the earth entirely, indeed, Allah is Free of need and Praiseworthy.”
Wa in min shay'in illā yusabbiḥu bi-ḥamdihi wa lākin lā tafqahūna tasbīḥahum.
“And there is not a thing except that it exalts Allah by His praise, but you do not understand their way of exalting.”
Wa ākhiru daʿwāhum ani-l-ḥamdu lillāhi rabbi-l-ʿālamīn.
“And the last of their call will be, Praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds.”
Abu Malik al-Ashari (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Purity is half of faith, and al-ḥamdu lillāh fills the scale.'
Praise is the fastest mood-realignment known to the believer. Complaint inventories what is missing; ḥamd inventories what is present, and both inventories are always available. The Prophet ﷺ praised Allah in ease and in hardship, teaching that al-ḥamdu lillāh ʿalā kulli ḥāl, praise in every state, is a station, not a slogan. Every creature is already praising, the verse says; joining in is simply waking up to the universal anthem. Start and end the day with it, say it when good news lands and, harder and higher, when it does not, and let your last sentence rehearse the people of Paradise's last sentence: praise to Allah, Lord of the worlds.
