This du'a appears in Surah al-Baqarah during the verses about Hajj. The preceding verse describes people who ask only for worldly gain; this verse teaches believers to ask for a life that is good now without losing sight of the Hereafter.
The word hasanah means good, but the request deliberately leaves that good broad. It can include faith, health, beneficial knowledge, lawful provision, a sound family and every blessing that truly benefits a person. The second request carries that same breadth into the Hereafter.
