A complete prayer contains words at every movement: the opening, bowing, rising, prostration, sitting, and the remembrances after salam. This collection keeps each wording at its proper place.
Rabbana taqabbal minna, innaka anta-s-Sami'u-l-'Alim.
“Our Lord, accept this from us. Indeed, You are the Hearing, the Knowing.”
The prayer Ibrahim (AS) and Ismail (AS) made while raising the foundations of the Ka'bah. Even during a great act of worship, they asked Allah (SWT) to accept it.
Idha sami'tumu-n-nida'a, faqulu mithla ma yaqulu-l-mu'adhdhin.
“When you hear the call to prayer, say what the muezzin says.”
Echo each phrase of the adhan after the muezzin, phrase by phrase. The two hayya phrases are the one exception, they have their own response.
La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah.
“There is no power and no strength except with Allah.”
When the muezzin calls 'come to prayer' and 'come to success', respond with these words instead of repeating the call.
Wa ana ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wahdahu la shareeka lah, wa anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh. Radeetu billahi rabban, wa bi-Muhammadin rasulan, wa bil-islami deena.
“And I too bear witness that there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and His Messenger. I am pleased with Allah as Lord, with Muhammad ﷺ as Messenger, and with Islam as religion.”
Said when the muezzin pronounces the shahada. The Prophet ﷺ promised that whoever says this from his heart, his sins are forgiven.
Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammad.
“O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad ﷺ.”
After answering the muezzin, send salawat on the Prophet ﷺ. Whoever sends one salawat upon him, Allah (SWT) sends ten upon him in return.
Allahumma rabba hadhihi-d-da'wati-t-tammah, wa-s-salati-l-qa'imah, ati Muhammadani-l-waseelata wa-l-fadeelah, wab'ath-hu maqaman mahmudani-lladhi wa'adtah.
“O Allah, Lord of this perfect call and of the prayer about to be established, grant Muhammad ﷺ al-Waseelah and the highest honour, and raise him to the praised station You have promised him.”
The Prophet ﷺ said that whoever says this after hearing the adhan, his intercession becomes due for him on the Day of Resurrection.
Ad-du'a'u la yuraddu bayna-l-adhani wa-l-iqamah.
“The supplication made between the adhan and the iqamah is not rejected.”
Not a fixed wording but an open door. In the quiet minutes before the iqamah, ask Allah (SWT) for whatever you need, in any words.
Subhanaka Allahumma wa bihamdika, wa tabaraka-smuka, wa ta'ala jadduka, wa la ilaha ghayruk.
“Glory be to You, O Allah, and all praise. Blessed is Your name, exalted is Your majesty, and there is no god other than You.”
Recited quietly after the opening takbir, before Al-Fatihah.
Subhana Rabbiyal-'Adheem.
“Glory be to my Lord, the Magnificent.”
Said while bowing, glorifying the greatness of Allah (SWT).
Sami'a Allahu liman hamidah. Rabbana wa lakal-hamd.
“Allah hears the one who praises Him. Our Lord, and to You belongs all praise.”
Said while rising to stand, then completed once upright.
Subhana Rabbiyal-A'la.
“Glory be to my Lord, the Most High.”
Said in prostration. The servant is nearest to his Lord while in sujood, so after the tasbih, ask abundantly.
Rabbighfir li, Rabbighfir li.
“My Lord, forgive me. My Lord, forgive me.”
Said in the brief sitting between the two prostrations.
Allahummaghfir li, warhamni, wajburni, wahdini, warzuqni.
“O Allah, forgive me, have mercy on me, mend my affairs, guide me, and provide for me.”
A fuller wording for the sitting between the two sujood, gathering forgiveness, mercy, wellbeing, guidance, and provision in five words.
At-tahiyyatu lillahi wa-s-salawatu wa-t-tayyibat. As-salamu 'alayka ayyuha-n-nabiyyu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh. As-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahi-s-saliheen. Ashhadu an la ilaha illallahu wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh.
“All greetings, prayers, and pure words are for Allah. Peace be upon you, O Prophet, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is His servant and His Messenger.”
Recited in the sitting position, exactly as the Prophet ﷺ taught it to the companions.
Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama sallayta 'ala Ibraheema wa 'ala ali Ibraheem, innaka Hameedun Majeed. Allahumma barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala ali Muhammad, kama barakta 'ala Ibraheema wa 'ala ali Ibraheem, innaka Hameedun Majeed.
“O Allah, send Your blessings upon Muhammad ﷺ and upon the family of Muhammad ﷺ, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim (AS) and upon the family of Ibrahim (AS). Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, bless Muhammad ﷺ and the family of Muhammad ﷺ, as You blessed Ibrahim (AS) and the family of Ibrahim (AS). Indeed, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.”
Follows the tashahhud in the final sitting, before the closing du'as.
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabi jahannam, wa min 'adhabi-l-qabr, wa min fitnati-l-mahya wa-l-mamat, wa min sharri fitnati-l-maseehi-d-dajjal.
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of Jahannam, from the punishment of the grave, from the trials of life and death, and from the evil of the trial of the false messiah.”
The Prophet ﷺ taught this seeking of refuge for the final sitting, after the tashahhud.
Allahumma inni dhalamtu nafsi dhulman katheeran, wa la yaghfiru-dh-dhunuba illa ant, faghfir li maghfiratan min 'indik, warhamni, innaka anta-l-Ghafuru-r-Raheem.
“O Allah, I have wronged myself greatly, and none forgives sins except You. So grant me forgiveness from Yourself and have mercy on me. Indeed, You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.”
Abu Bakr asked the Prophet ﷺ for a du'a to say in his salah, and this was the answer he was given.
Astaghfirullah.
“I seek forgiveness from Allah.”
The very first thing the Prophet ﷺ said on completing salah was to seek forgiveness three times.
Allahumma anta-s-Salam, wa minka-s-salam, tabarakta ya Dha-l-Jalali wa-l-Ikram.
“O Allah, You are Peace and from You is peace. Blessed are You, O Possessor of Majesty and Honour.”
Said right after the three istighfars. 'As-Salam' is one of Allah's names, we are returning peace to its source.
La ilaha illa-llahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-hamd, wa Huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir. Allahumma la mani'a lima a'tayt, wa la mu'tiya lima mana't, wa la yanfa'u dha-l-jaddi minka-l-jadd.
“There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is all praise, and He is over all things Powerful. O Allah, none can withhold what You grant, and none can grant what You withhold, and no wealthy one benefits against You with their wealth.”
Allahumma a'inni 'ala dhikrika, wa shukrika, wa husni 'ibadatik.
“O Allah, help me remember You, thank You, and worship You in the best manner.”
The Prophet ﷺ told Mu'adh to never leave this after every salah, 'I love you, O Mu'adh; do not forget to say…'
SubhanAllah.
“Glory be to Allah.”
The Prophet ﷺ taught this after each fard: SubhanAllah 33×, Alhamdulillah 33×, and Allahu Akbar 34× (Sahih Muslim 596). He taught the same count to his daughter Fatimah at bedtime, better for her than a servant (Sahih al-Bukhari 6318).
Alhamdulillah.
“All praise is due to Allah.”
Allahu Akbar.
“Allah is the Greatest.”
La ilaha illa-llahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahu-l-mulku wa lahu-l-hamd, wa Huwa 'ala kulli shay'in Qadir.
“There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is all praise, and He is over all things Powerful.”
In the narration of Abu Hurairah, SubhanAllah, Alhamdulillah and Allahu Akbar are each said 33×, and the hundred is completed with this once. Whoever says it has their sins forgiven, even if they were like the foam of the sea.
Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa, al-Hayyu-l-Qayyum. La ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm. Lahu ma fi-s-samawati wa ma fi-l-ard. Man dha-lladhi yashfa'u 'indahu illa bi-idhnih. Ya'lamu ma bayna aydihim wa ma khalfahum, wa la yuhituna bi-shay'in min 'ilmihi illa bi-ma sha'. Wasi'a kursiyyuhu-s-samawati wa-l-ard, wa la ya'uduhu hifdhuhuma, wa Huwa-l-'Aliyyu-l-'Adheem.
“Allah, there is no god but He, the Living, the Self-Subsisting. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what lies before them and what is behind them, and they grasp nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
The Prophet ﷺ said whoever recites it after every fard prayer has nothing between them and Paradise except death.
Qul Huwa-llahu Ahad… Qul a'udhu bi Rabbi-l-falaq… Qul a'udhu bi Rabbi-n-nas…
“Recite Surahs al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas after each fard prayer.”
'Uqbah ibn 'Amir said the Prophet ﷺ told him to recite the mu'awwidhat after every prayer (Sunan Abi Dawud 1523). Reciting the three Quls three times in the morning and the evening, which 'will suffice you against everything', is a separate narration (Sunan Abi Dawud 5082), so many recite them three times after Fajr and Maghrib.
Allahumma ajirni min an-nar.
“O Allah, protect me from the Fire.”
Narrated as said seven times after Maghrib and after Fajr, with the promise that whoever dies that night or that day is granted protection from the Fire; another chain adds "before speaking to anyone" (Sunan Abi Dawud 5080). Al-Albani and Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut graded it weak (da'if); Zubair Ali Za'i graded it hasan.
Allahumma-ftah li abwaba rahmatik.
“O Allah, open for me the doors of Your mercy.”
The Prophet ﷺ said that when one of you enters the masjid, let him say this (Sahih Muslim 713). In Abu Dawud's narration (465) he first sends salam upon the Prophet ﷺ.
Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik.
“O Allah, I ask You of Your bounty.”
Taught in the same hadith: mercy is asked for on the way in, bounty on the way out (Sahih Muslim 713).
Bismillah.
“In the name of Allah.”
The Prophet ﷺ said there is no wudu for the one who does not mention Allah's name over it. Scholars differ on whether this makes the bismillah obligatory or strongly recommended.
Ash-hadu an la ilaha illa-llahu wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ash-hadu anna Muhammadan 'abduhu wa rasuluh. Allahumma-j'alni mina-t-tawwabina wa-j'alni mina-l-mutatahhirin.
“I bear witness there is no god but Allah alone, with no partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. O Allah, make me among those who turn to You in repentance, and make me among those who purify themselves.”
The Prophet ﷺ said whoever completes their wudu and says this, the eight gates of paradise are opened for them.
Allahumma inni as'aluka-l-jannah, wa a'udhu bika mina-n-nar.
“O Allah, I ask You for Paradise, and I seek refuge in You from the Fire.”
A man told the Prophet ﷺ that after the tashahhud he simply asked for Paradise and refuge from the Fire, as he could not match the longer supplications of the Prophet ﷺ and Mu'adh. The Prophet ﷺ replied that their supplications revolve around the same. He ﷺ also said that whoever asks Allah (SWT) for Paradise three times, Paradise says: O Allah (SWT), admit him to Paradise; and whoever seeks refuge from the Fire three times, the Fire says: O Allah (SWT), protect him from the Fire (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2572, sahih).
Allahumma inni as'aluka 'ilman nafi'an, wa rizqan tayyiban, wa 'amalan mutaqabbalan.
“O Allah, I ask You for beneficial knowledge, good provision, and accepted deeds.”
Allahumma inni as'aluka min fadlik.
“O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.”
Allahumma bi-'ilmika-l-ghayba wa qudratika 'ala-l-khalqi ahyini ma 'alimta-l-hayata khayran li, wa tawaffani idha 'alimta-l-wafata khayran li. Allahumma wa as'aluka khashyataka fi-l-ghaybi wa-sh-shahadah, wa as'aluka kalimata-l-haqqi fi-r-rida wa-l-ghadab, wa as'aluka-l-qasda fi-l-faqri wa-l-ghina, wa as'aluka na'iman la yanfad, wa as'aluka qurrata 'aynin la tanqati', wa as'aluka-r-rida'a ba'da-l-qada', wa as'aluka barda-l-'ayshi ba'da-l-mawt, wa as'aluka ladhdhata-n-nadhari ila wajhik, wa-sh-shawqa ila liqa'ik, fi ghayri darra'a mudirrah, wa la fitnatin mudillah. Allahumma zayyinna bi-zinati-l-iman, waj'alna hudatan muhtadin.
“O Allah, by Your knowledge of the unseen and Your power over creation, keep me alive as long as You know life is better for me, and take me when You know death is better for me. O Allah, I ask You for fear of You in private and in public. I ask You for the word of truth in contentment and in anger. I ask You for moderation in poverty and in wealth. I ask You for a bliss that never runs out and a delight of the eye that never ceases. I ask You for contentment after Your decree, and for a cool, pleasant life after death. I ask You for the joy of looking upon Your Face and a longing to meet You, without harmful adversity or a misleading trial. O Allah, adorn us with the beauty of faith, and make us guides who are rightly guided.”
'Ammar ibn Yasir led a short prayer and explained that he had made du'a in it with words he heard from the Prophet ﷺ. Among them: truthful speech whether pleased or angry, contentment with Allah's decree, and faith that adorns the believer.
Allahumma ba'id bayni wa bayna khatayaya kama ba'adta baynal-mashriqi wal-maghrib. Allahumma naqqini min khatayaya kama yunaqqath-thawbul-abyadu minad-danas. Allahumma-ghsilni min khatayaya bith-thalji wal-ma'i wal-barad
“O Allah, put distance between me and my sins as You have put distance between the east and the west. O Allah, cleanse me of my sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. O Allah, wash away my sins with snow, water and hail.”
Said quietly between the opening takbir and the recitation.
Wajjahtu wajhiya lilladhi fataras-samawati wal-arda hanifan wa ma ana minal-mushrikin. Inna salati wa nusuki wa mahyaya wa mamati lillahi rabbil-'alamin, la sharika lah, wa bidhalika umirtu wa ana minal-muslimin. Allahumma antal-maliku la ilaha illa ant, anta rabbi wa ana 'abduk, dhalamtu nafsi wa'taraftu bidhanbi faghfir li dhunubi jami'an innahu la yaghfirudh-dhunuba illa ant. Wahdini li-ahsanil-akhlaqi la yahdi li-ahsaniha illa ant, wasrif 'anni sayyi'aha la yasrifu 'anni sayyi'aha illa ant. Labbayka wa sa'dayk, wal-khayru kulluhu biyadayk, wash-sharru laysa ilayk, ana bika wa ilayk, tabarakta wa ta'alayt, astaghfiruka wa atubu ilayk
“I have turned my face, inclining to the truth, toward the One who created the heavens and the earth, and I am not of those who associate partners with Him. My prayer, my sacrifice, my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of the worlds. He has no partner. This I have been commanded, and I am of those who submit. O Allah, You are the King; there is no god but You. You are my Lord and I am Your servant. I have wronged myself and I admit my sin, so forgive me all my sins, for none forgives sins but You. Guide me to the best of character, for none guides to the best of it but You, and turn its bad away from me, for none can turn its bad away from me but You. Here I am at Your service, gladly. All good is in Your hands, and evil is not attributed to You. I exist by You and I return to You. Blessed and exalted are You. I seek Your forgiveness and turn to You in repentance.”
Allahumma rabba Jibra'ila wa Mika'ila wa Israfil, fatiras-samawati wal-ard, 'alimal-ghaybi wash-shahadah, anta tahkumu bayna 'ibadika fima kanu fihi yakhtalifun. Ihdini limakhtulifa fihi minal-haqqi bi-idhnik, innaka tahdi man tasha'u ila siratim-mustaqim
“O Allah, Lord of Jibril, Mika'il and Israfil, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, You judge between Your servants in what they used to differ over. Guide me, by Your permission, to the truth in what has been disputed. You guide whom You will to a straight path.”
The Prophet ﷺ opened his night prayer with this.
Allahu akbaru kabira, Allahu akbaru kabira, Allahu akbaru kabira, wal-hamdu lillahi kathira, wal-hamdu lillahi kathira, wal-hamdu lillahi kathira, wa subhana-llahi bukratan wa asila (three times). A'udhu billahi minash-shaytan, min nafkhihi wa nafthihi wa hamzih
“Allah is the Greatest, truly great (three times). Much praise belongs to Allah (three times). Glory be to Allah, morning and evening (three times). I seek refuge in Allah from the devil: from his pride, his poetry and his madness.”
Said at the opening of the prayer, each of the first three phrases three times. Al-Albani graded this threefold form weak; Shu'ayb al-Arna'ut graded it hasan through supporting chains. Saying "Allahu akbaru kabira, wa-l-hamdu lillahi kathira, wa subhana-llahi bukratan wa asila" once at the opening is sahih (Sahih Muslim 601).
Allahumma lakal-hamdu anta nurus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinn, wa lakal-hamdu anta qayyimus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinn, wa lakal-hamdu anta rabbus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinn, wa lakal-hamdu laka mulkus-samawati wal-ardi wa man fihinn, wa lakal-hamdu anta malikus-samawati wal-ard, wa lakal-hamd, antal-haqq, wa wa'dukal-haqq, wa qawlukal-haqq, wa liqa'ukal-haqq, wal-jannatu haqq, wan-naru haqq, wan-nabiyyuna haqq, wa Muhammadun sallallahu 'alayhi wa sallama haqq, was-sa'atu haqq. Allahumma laka aslamtu, wa 'alayka tawakkaltu, wa bika amantu, wa ilayka anabtu, wa bika khasamtu, wa ilayka hakamtu, faghfir li ma qaddamtu wa ma akhkhartu, wa ma asrartu wa ma a'lantu, wa ma anta a'lamu bihi minni. Antal-muqaddimu wa antal-mu'akhkhiru la ilaha illa ant. Anta ilahi la ilaha illa ant. Wa la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah
“O Allah, all praise is Yours. You are the Light of the heavens and the earth and all within them. All praise is Yours. You are the Sustainer of the heavens and the earth and all within them. All praise is Yours. You are the Lord of the heavens and the earth and all within them. All praise is Yours. Yours is the dominion of the heavens and the earth and all within them. All praise is Yours. You are the King of the heavens and the earth. All praise is Yours. You are the Truth, Your promise is true, Your word is true, the meeting with You is true, Paradise is true, the Fire is true, the prophets are true, Muhammad ﷺ is true, and the Hour is true. O Allah, to You I have submitted, in You I have placed my trust, in You I have believed, to You I have turned, by You I contend, and to You I bring my case for judgment. So forgive me what I have sent before and what I have left behind, what I have hidden and what I have made known, and what You know better than I. You are the One who brings forward and the One who holds back; there is no god but You. You are my God; there is no god but You. And there is no might nor power except through Allah.”
The Prophet ﷺ said this when he rose to pray at night. The bracketed phrases in the Arabic come from different narrations of the same hadith.
Subhanaka-llahumma rabbana wa bihamdik, Allahumma-ghfir li
“Glory be to You, O Allah, our Lord, and praise be to You. O Allah, forgive me.”
The Prophet ﷺ said this often in his bowing and prostration.
Subbuhun quddusun, rabbul-mala'ikati war-ruh
“Perfect and Holy, Lord of the angels and of the Spirit.”
The Spirit refers to Jibril.
Allahumma laka raka'tu, wa bika amantu, wa laka aslamtu, khasha'a laka sam'i wa basari wa mukhkhi wa 'adhmi wa 'asabi
“O Allah, to You I have bowed, in You I have believed, and to You I have submitted. My hearing, my sight, my mind, my bones and my sinews are humbled before You.”
Subhana dhil-jabaruti wal-malakuti wal-kibriya'i wal-'adhamah
“Glory be to the Possessor of all might, dominion, pride and grandeur.”
The Prophet ﷺ said this in his bowing during the night prayer.
Rabbana wa lakal-hamd, hamdan kathiran tayyiban mubarakan fih
“Our Lord, and to You belongs all praise, abundant, pure and blessed praise.”
The Prophet ﷺ said he saw more than thirty angels hurrying to be the first to record it.
Mil'as-samawati wa mil'al-ardi wa ma baynahuma, wa mil'a ma shi'ta min shay'in ba'd. Ahlath-thana'i wal-majd, ahaqqu ma qalal-'abd, wa kulluna laka 'abd. Allahumma la mani'a lima a'tayt, wa la mu'tiya lima mana't, wa la yanfa'u dhal-jaddi minkal-jadd
“Praise filling the heavens, filling the earth and what is between them, and filling whatever else You will. You are worthy of praise and glory, the truest thing a servant has said, and all of us are Your servants. O Allah, none can withhold what You give, none can give what You withhold, and the wealth of the wealthy cannot avail him against You.”
Said after 'Rabbana wa lakal-hamd' when standing up from bowing.
Allahumma laka sajadtu, wa bika amantu, wa laka aslamtu, sajada wajhiya lilladhi khalaqahu wa sawwarahu wa shaqqa sam'ahu wa basarah, tabaraka-llahu ahsanul-khaliqin
“O Allah, to You I have prostrated, in You I have believed, and to You I have submitted. My face has prostrated to the One who created it, gave it form, and brought forth its hearing and sight. Blessed is Allah, the best of creators.”
Allahumma-ghfir li dhanbi kullah, diqqahu wa jillah, wa awwalahu wa akhirah, wa 'alaniyatahu wa sirrah
“O Allah, forgive me all my sins, the small and the great, the first and the last, the open and the secret.”
Allahumma inni a'udhu biridaka min sakhatik, wa bimu'afatika min 'uqubatik, wa a'udhu bika mink, la uhsi thana'an 'alayk, anta kama athnayta 'ala nafsik
“O Allah, I seek refuge in Your pleasure from Your anger, and in Your pardon from Your punishment, and I seek refuge in You from You. I cannot count Your praises. You are as You have praised Yourself.”
'A'ishah found the Prophet ﷺ in prostration at night saying this (Sahih Muslim 486). He ﷺ also said it at the end of his witr (Sunan Abi Dawud 1427, Jami at-Tirmidhi 3566, sahih).
Sajada wajhiya lilladhi khalaqah, wa shaqqa sam'ahu wa basarahu bihawlihi wa quwwatih
“My face has prostrated to the One who created it and brought forth its hearing and sight by His might and power.”
Said in the prostration of recitation.
Allahumma-ktub li biha 'indaka ajra, wa da' 'anni biha wizra, waj'alha li 'indaka dhukhra, wa taqabbalha minni kama taqabbaltaha min 'abdika Dawud
“O Allah, record for me a reward for it with You, remove a burden of sin from me by it, store it up for me with You as a treasure, and accept it from me as You accepted it from Your servant Dawud.”
Allahumma salli 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala azwajihi wa dhurriyyatih, kama sallayta 'ala ali Ibrahim. Wa barik 'ala Muhammadin wa 'ala azwajihi wa dhurriyyatih, kama barakta 'ala ali Ibrahim, innaka hamidum-majid
“O Allah, send prayers upon Muhammad, his wives and his descendants, as You sent prayers upon the family of Ibrahim. And bless Muhammad, his wives and his descendants, as You blessed the family of Ibrahim. You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.”
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika min 'adhabil-qabr, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-masihid-dajjal, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatil-mahya wal-mamat. Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-ma'thami wal-maghram
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave, I seek refuge in You from the trial of the False Messiah, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of life and death. O Allah, I seek refuge in You from sin and from debt.”
Allahumma-ghfir li ma qaddamtu wa ma akhkhart, wa ma asrartu wa ma a'lant, wa ma asraft, wa ma anta a'lamu bihi minni. Antal-muqaddimu wa antal-mu'akhkhir, la ilaha illa ant
“O Allah, forgive me what I have sent before and what I have left behind, what I have hidden and what I have made known, what I have done in excess, and what You know better than I. You are the One who brings forward and the One who holds back. There is no god but You.”
Allahumma inni a'udhu bika minal-bukhl, wa a'udhu bika minal-jubn, wa a'udhu bika min an uradda ila ardhalil-'umur, wa a'udhu bika min fitnatid-dunya wa 'adhabil-qabr
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from miserliness, I seek refuge in You from cowardice, I seek refuge in You from being returned to the most feeble stage of life, and I seek refuge in You from the trials of this world and the punishment of the grave.”
Allahumma inni as'aluka ya Allahu bi-annakal-wahidul-ahadus-samad, alladhi lam yalid wa lam yulad, wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad, an taghfira li dhunubi, innaka antal-ghafurur-rahim
“O Allah, I ask You, O Allah, as You are the One, the Unique, the Self-Sufficient, who neither begets nor was begotten, and to whom no one is equal, to forgive me my sins. You are the Forgiving, the Merciful.”
The Prophet ﷺ said of the man who prayed this: he has been forgiven.
Allahumma inni as'aluka bi-anna lakal-hamd, la ilaha illa anta wahdaka la sharika lak, al-mannan, ya badi'as-samawati wal-ard, ya dhal-jalali wal-ikram, ya hayyu ya qayyum
“O Allah, I ask You, for all praise is Yours. There is no god but You alone, with no partner, the Bestower of favours. O Originator of the heavens and the earth, O Possessor of majesty and honour, O Ever-Living, O Sustainer of all.”
The Prophet ﷺ said this man had called upon Allah (SWT) by His greatest name, by which He answers when called upon.
Allahumma inni as'aluka bi-anni ash-hadu annaka anta-llahu la ilaha illa antal-ahadus-samad, alladhi lam yalid wa lam yulad, wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad
“O Allah, I ask You, as I bear witness that You are Allah, there is no god but You, the Unique, the Self-Sufficient, who neither begets nor was begotten, and to whom no one is equal.”
The Prophet ﷺ said this man had asked Allah (SWT) by His greatest name.
La ilaha illa-llahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir. La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah, la ilaha illa-llahu wa la na'budu illa iyyah, lahun-ni'matu wa lahul-fadlu wa lahuth-thana'ul-hasan, la ilaha illa-llahu mukhlisina lahud-dina wa law karihal-kafirun
“There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise, and He has power over all things. There is no might nor power except through Allah. There is no god but Allah, and we worship none but Him. His is all blessing, His is all bounty, and His is the most beautiful praise. There is no god but Allah; we devote our religion sincerely to Him, even if the disbelievers dislike it.”
The Prophet ﷺ said this after the salam of every prayer.
La ilaha illa-llahu wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, yuhyi wa yumit, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir
“There is no god but Allah alone, with no partner. His is the dominion and His is the praise. He gives life and causes death, and He has power over all things.”
Say it ten times after the Maghrib prayer.
Allahumma-hdini fiman hadayt, wa 'afini fiman 'afayt, wa tawallani fiman tawallayt, wa barik li fima a'tayt, wa qini sharra ma qadayt, fa-innaka taqdi wa la yuqda 'alayk, innahu la yadhillu man walayt, wa la ya'izzu man 'adayt, tabarakta rabbana wa ta'alayt
“O Allah, guide me among those You have guided, grant me well-being among those You have granted well-being, take me into Your care among those You have taken into Your care, bless me in what You have given, and protect me from the evil of what You have decreed. You decree, and none decrees over You. Whoever You befriend is never humiliated, and whoever You oppose is never honoured. Blessed are You, our Lord, and Exalted.”
The Prophet ﷺ taught this to his grandson al-Hasan ibn 'Ali to say in the witr.
Subhanal-malikil-quddus
“Glory be to the King, the Most Holy.”
Said three times after the salam of witr, raising and drawing out the voice on the third.
A'udhu billahi mina-sh-shaytani-r-rajim
“I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.”
If distracted in prayer or recitation, seek refuge in Allah (SWT) and lightly blow (a dry spit) to your left three times. 'Uthman ibn Abi al-'As did this and the distraction left him.
