From the Quran & Hadith
From the root qaf-waw-mim (ق و م), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of standing, rising, and existing; being self-subsisting, standing by oneself; and maintaining, managing, and sustaining others. Al-Qayyoom is the intensive form joining both directions: He stands by Himself needing nothing, and everything else stands by Him, needing Him for every instant of its standing.
Partner of Al-Haiyy in the greatest Name
Al-Qayyoom appears in the Quran only beside Al-Haiyy: in Ayat al-Kursi (2:255), in Aal-Imran's opening (3:2), and on the Day when 'faces will be humbled before the Ever-Living, the Sustainer' (20:111). Perfect life plus perfect self-subsistence: the scholars saw in this pair the greatest Name because everything else follows from it, and a living sustainer who neither sleeps nor tires is the only kind of God worth the word.
Held, or nothing
'Neither drowsiness overtakes Him nor sleep' (2:255) is not decoration; it is load-bearing. If the Sustainer blinked, existence would not stagger, it would vanish: 'Indeed, Allah holds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease' (Quran 35:41). Your next breath is not owed to your lungs but to His continuing maintenance of your lungs, and of breath, and of you. Deism's absent watchmaker is the exact opposite of Al-Qayyoom.
Allāhu lā ilāha illā huwa-l-Ḥayyu-l-Qayyūm.
“Allah, there is no deity except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of existence.”

Lā ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa lā nawm. Lahu mā fi-s-samāwāti wa mā fi-l-arḍ.

Self-made is the flattering fiction of our era; Al-Qayyoom retires it. Nothing in existence is self-made or self-sustaining except One, and He is not you. Seeing your career, health, and next heartbeat as actively maintained gifts, not owned assets, produces the strange double crop this Name is known for: deeper humility and deeper security at once. And here is the practical wonder: the Sustainer of galaxies does not consider your small collapsing world beneath His maintenance. The overwhelmed parent, the failing student, the one holding a family together with thinning rope, all are invited to transfer the load: Yā Qayyūm, You hold the heavens; hold my affairs too. He was already holding them.
