The Eternal Refuge
The Eternal Refuge, sought by all creation, needing none of it.
As-Samad appears once in the Quran, in Surah al-Ikhlas, beside Al-Ahad: the One, the Refuge. Every creature's needs point somewhere; every chain of dependency, followed honestly to its end, arrives at Him. He is the only door with no door behind it.

From the root sad-mim-dal (ص م د), which carries two classical streams that meet in this Name: the chief to whom all matters are directed and all needs are carried, and the solid, self-sufficient one who needs nothing from anyone. As-Samad is where every chain of need terminates: all creation leans on Him; He leans on nothing.
The commentators' portrait
The early commentators circled this Name with complementary definitions: the Master to whom all affairs are referred; the One all creatures depend on for existence and needs; the Perfect One with no deficiency, who does not eat nor drink nor sleep; the Everlasting after creation perishes. Ibn Abbas gathered it simply: the chief perfected in his sovereignty. Every definition triangulates the same reality: dependency flows one way in existence, all of it toward Him, none of it from Him.
Placed beside Ahad on purpose
Al-Ikhlas pairs Ahad and Samad as question and answer: if He is utterly unique and incomparable, can we reach Him? Samad answers: He is precisely the One to bring your needs to. Transcendence without unavailability, that is the Islamic revelation of God in two Names. The One beyond all likeness keeps, so to speak, an open door for every beggar in creation, and prefers the ones who come often.
Qul huwa-llāhu aḥad. Allāhu-ṣ-ṣamad.
“Say: He is Allah, who is One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge.”
Yā ayyuha-n-nāsu antumu-l-fuqarā'u ila-llāh, wa-llāhu huwa-l-Ghaniyyu-l-Ḥamīd.
“O mankind, you are those in need of Allah, while Allah is the Free of need, the Praiseworthy.”
Human beings are needy by construction, and we mostly cope by distributing our needs across other needy beings: people who may leave, institutions that may fail, savings that may evaporate. As-Samad is the only load-bearing wall in existence; everything else is drywall. The believer still loves and uses the means, but he files his deepest needs where the building cannot collapse. There is also a quiet dignity lesson here. The closer a servant draws to As-Samad, the less he begs at creaturely doors; his needs travel upward before they travel outward. The salaf were known by it: soft before Allah at night, unpurchasable before men by day. That independence is this Name's fragrance on a human life.
