The Absolutely One, indivisible, incomparable, beyond all category.

From the root hamza-ha-dal (أ ح د), a sibling of the root of Al-Waahid with its own precision: aḥad is oneness absolute and indivisible, oneness that has no parts, no components, and nothing comparable. Numbers can follow wāḥid, one, then two; nothing follows aḥad. It is the oneness beyond counting.
The surah that answers every theology
Surah al-Ikhlas was revealed when the Prophet ﷺ was asked to describe his Lord, and its four verses retire every false theology at once: He is Allah, Ahad; Allah, as-Samad; He neither begets nor is born, dismissing every divine genealogy ever invented; and there is none comparable to Him, closing the door on every idol, icon, and analogy. The Prophet ﷺ declared it equal to a third of the Quran (Sahih al-Bukhari 5013), because the Quran's message is creed, law, and stories, and this surah is the whole creed.
Ahad, deeper than one
The scholars savor the choice of aḥad over wāḥid in this surah. Wāḥid can sit in a series; aḥad cannot. Wāḥid can describe a united composite; aḥad admits no composition at all. The Name denies not only other gods but any internal multiplicity: He is not made of parts, attributes bolted together, or persons in relation. Utterly, simply, indivisibly One, and therefore utterly unlike everything that is assembled, which is everything else.
Qul huwa-llāhu aḥad. Allāhu-ṣ-ṣamad. Lam yalid wa lam yūlad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan aḥad.
“Say: He is Allah, who is One. Allah, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.”
The Prophet ﷺ said concerning qul huwa-llāhu aḥad: 'By Him in whose Hand is my soul, it is equal to a third of the Quran.'
Al-Ahad is the Name Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) gasped under the rock of his torturers: aḥad, aḥad. One, One. When everything else was being crushed out of him, the indivisible One was the one possession no oppressor could reach. The Name is a fortress exactly one word wide, and it has sheltered the persecuted of this ummah ever since. Recite its surah the way the Prophet ﷺ commended, in the sunnahs of dawn, before sleep, thrice for a Quran's third, and let its logic simplify you. A heart certain that the Ultimate is One stops negotiating with the many. One direction, one allegiance, one fear, one hope: the unity of the Worshipped, reflected as the integrity of the worshipper.
Allāhumma innī as'aluka bi-annaka-l-Aḥadu-ṣ-Ṣamadu-lladhī lam yalid wa lam yūlad an taghfira lī dhunūbī
O Allah, I ask You, as You are the One, the Eternal Refuge, who neither begets nor is born, to forgive me my sins.
