AL QAADIR MEANING

The Able, for whom capability has no edge and no exception.

Al-Qaadir does what He wills as He wills, without effort, tools, or preconditions. The phrase the Quran repeats like a heartbeat, 'indeed, Allah is over all things competent', ʿalā kulli shay'in qadīr, is this Name applied to everything you will ever face.

Mentions of Al Qaadir

From the Quran & Hadith

Arabic root
ق د رto have power, ability, capability; to measure and decree; to determine with precision

From the root qaf-dal-ra (ق د ر), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of power, ability, and capability, intertwined with measuring, decreeing, and determining with precision. In this root, power and measure are one idea: qadar, the decree, is power exercised with exactness. Al-Qaadir is able over all things, and His ability always lands measured.

Able down to the fingertips

The Quran demonstrates His capability with surgical precision: 'Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? Yes indeed; We are Able to put together in perfect order the tips of his fingers' (Quran 75:3-4). Not just bones re-gathered, but fingerprints, the finest signature of individuality, restored ridge by ridge. Fourteen centuries before dactyloscopy, capability was declared at the resolution of the fingertip.

Power that never spills

Because qudrah and qadar share a root, His power never acts out of scale: 'Indeed, all things We created with predestination (bi-qadar)' (Quran 54:49), and 'He created each thing and determined it with precise determination' (Quran 25:2). Creaturely power damages by excess and fails by shortfall; His arrives in the exact quantity the wisdom of the moment requires. Omnipotence with a jeweller's hand.

From the Quran

A-yaḥsabu-l-insānu allan najmaʿa ʿidhāmah. Balā qādirīna ʿalā an nusawwiya banānah.

Does man think that We will not assemble his bones? Yes indeed; We are Able to put together in perfect order the tips of his fingers.

Quran 75:3-4 (Al-Qiyamah)
قُلْ هُوَ ٱلْقَادِرُ عَلَىٰٓ أَن يَبْعَثَ عَلَيْكُمْ عَذَابًا مِّن فَوْقِكُمْ

Qul huwa-l-Qādiru ʿalā an yabʿatha ʿalaykum ʿadhāban min fawqikum.

Say: He is the Able One to send upon you affliction from above you.

Quran 6:65 (Al-An'am)
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلَىٰ كُلِّ شَىْءٍ قَدِيرٌ

Inna-llāha ʿalā kulli shay'in qadīr.

Indeed, Allah is over all things competent.

Quran 2:20 (Al-Baqarah)
Reflection

Hopelessness always contains a hidden theology: this cannot change. Al-Qaadir contradicts it by Name. The marriage pronounced dead, the addiction pronounced permanent, the door pronounced sealed, every 'impossible' in your vocabulary is a claim about His capability, and the claim is false. Nothing you will pray for tonight is difficult for the One who reassembles fingerprints. Let the Name also retune how you hold your own small abilities. They are loans from His qudrah, issued with expiry dates, so spend strength on what will still matter when strength is gone. And before any daunting task, arm yourself with the believer's pre-mission sentence: mā shā'a-llāhu kāna; I am not able, but I move with the Able One.

Calling on Allah by this Name

Allāhumma lā māniʿa limā aʿṭayta wa lā muʿṭiya limā manaʿta wa anta ʿalā kulli shay'in qadīr

O Allah, none can withhold what You give, and none can give what You withhold, and You are over all things able.
