Al Azeez
The Mighty One
The Strong, the Most Esteemed, the Exalted in Might.
Al-Aziz is the One who is most powerful and strong, the conqueror who is never conquered and never harmed. His strength, glory, and power are overwhelming and cannot be resisted. He is the only one with complete mastery over all creation.
Mentions of Al Azeez
From the Quran & Hadith
From the root ʿayn-zay-zay (ع ز ز), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of being mighty, potent, strong, powerful; being high, elevated, noble, exalted, honourable, glorious; being indomitable, invincible; and being respected, cherished, scarce, rare, precious, and unattainable. The word *ʿazīz* comes from *ʿizzat*, meaning honour and nobility.
The divine pairing of Names
This great Name appears approximately 90 times in the Quran, often paired with another Name — Al-ʿAzīzu-r-Raḥīm, Al-ʿAzīzu-l-Ḥakīm, Al-ʿAzīzu-l-Ghaffār, Al-ʿAzīzu-l-Wahhāb. The pairings carry layered meaning we would miss if we studied each Name alone. What does it mean to be Al-ʿAzīz Ar-Raḥīm? Allah is in a position of total power — He could subdue anyone who opposes Him. Yet to those who deny and disbelieve, He is merciful first. As the Prophet ﷺ relayed from Allah: 'My mercy predominates over My wrath.' He does not hasten to punish those who err; He gives time to repent. Even when He does punish, He punishes with mercy. These meanings are best understood through the pairing of Names — divine design, not accident.
Al-Aziz and Al-Hakeem
The pairing of Al-Aziz with Al-Hakeem (the All-Wise) is particularly striking. The maxim 'absolute power corrupts absolutely' does not apply to Allah, because He is also the All-Wise. Humans are fallible — we repeatedly see power corrupt people in even small domains, often paired with cronyism, nepotism, and corruption. People we once thought wise or humble become blinded by power. Only Allah combines absolute power with absolute wisdom, perfectly.
Common pairings of Al-Aziz
Al-Hakeem (All-Wise): 47 times. Ar-Raheem (Merciful): 13 times. Al-Qawiyy (the Strong): 7 times. Al-Aleem (the All-Knowing): 6 times. Al-Ghaffar (the Oft-Forgiving): 5 times. Al-Hameed (the Praiseworthy): 3 times. There are further pairings — these are the most frequent.

“[He is] the cleaver of daybreak and has made the night for rest and the sun and moon for calculation. That is the determination of the Exalted in Might, the Knowing.”
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, narrating from his Lord, 'My mercy predominates over My wrath.'
Knowing Al-Aziz is to know where true might lies. It is natural to aspire to wealth, power, or prestige — and these can be noble pursuits if the goal is to serve Islam or help others. But to be blinded by ambition, forgetting your other duties, is not virtuous. It is a fine line, requiring honest self-examination. If you carry a burning desire for success, health, wealth, or honour, seek it from the True Possessor of might — not from people who might one day withdraw it from you. Surah Al-Imran 3:26 captures this: 'Say: O Allah, Owner of Sovereignty, You give sovereignty to whom You will and take it from whom You will. You honour whom You will and humble whom You will. In Your hand is all good. Indeed, You are over all things competent.'
Yā ʿAzīz, aʿizzanī bi-ṭāʿatik
O Al-Aziz, honour me through obedience to You.
