Al Jabbaar
The All-Compelling
The Irresistible, the Restorer, the Repairer.
Al-Jabbar carries several accepted meanings. The most often quoted is *The Compeller*: He implements His decree without opposition, and there is no one who prevails over Him. A second interpretation is *the Repairer*: He restores all creation, heals the broken-hearted, binds wounds, and brings comfort to the weak. He compels everything to His divine will, but is never Himself compelled.
Mentions of Al Jabbaar
From the Quran & Hadith
From the root jīm-bā-rā (ج ب ر), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of restoring something to a sound, right, or good state; bringing back to normal; reforming; conferring benefit; being supreme and above all of creation; and being compelling and irresistible.
As a Name of Allah, Al-Jabbar appears only once in the Quran, in Surah Al-Hashr 59:23. But other verses help us understand what it means for Him to be Al-Jabbar.
Verses that describe His decree
In Surah Al-Insan 76:30 Allah says, 'And you do not will except that Allah wills. Indeed, Allah is ever Knowing and Wise.' Allah is the One who compels — we do not choose where we are born, who our parents are, our physical traits, or the small quirks that make us who we are. We do not fully understand the intricacies of our anatomy, the beating of the heart, the firing of nerves, or the formation of a new baby. All these details of perfection are because Allah has compelled them. In Surah Ya-Sin 36:82: 'His command is only when He intends a thing that He says to it, *Be*, and it is.'
A second meaning: the Restorer
Al-Jabbar also means the One who restores, resets, and fixes brokenness. He sets right what is disordered, by His own power. So we may make du'a using this Name when we want something restored or repaired in our lives — a relationship, a health, a heart. Just as He compels a thing, He can also put our lives in order. He alone mends what is broken and restores what is lost.
Huwa-llāhu-lladhī lā ilāha illā huwa-l-Maliku-l-Quddūsu-s-Salāmu-l-Mu'minu-l-Muhayminu-l-ʿAzīzu-l-Jabbāru-l-Mutakabbir.
“He is Allah, other than whom there is no deity, the Sovereign, the Pure, the Perfection, the Bestower of Faith, the Overseer, the Exalted in Might, the Compeller, the Superior.”
Kadhālika yaṭbaʿu-llāhu ʿalā kulli qalbi mutakabbirin jabbār.
“Thus does Allah seal over every heart [belonging to] an arrogant tyrant.”
Hudhayfah (RA) prayed with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ one night, and heard him say at the Takbir: 'Allāhu Akbar, dhū-l-jabarūti wa-l-malakūti wa-l-kibriyā'i wa-l-ʿaẓamah' — Allah is Most Great, the One who has all power, sovereignty, magnificence, and might. In bowing he would say 'Subḥāna Rabbiya-l-ʿAẓīm'; on rising, 'Lirabbi-l-ḥamd, Lirabbi-l-ḥamd'; in prostration, 'Subḥāna Rabbiya-l-Aʿlā'; and between the two prostrations, 'Rabbi-ghfirlī, Rabbi-ghfirlī'.
When we come to know Al-Jabbar, we realise Allah holds extreme power, supremacy, and strength over all creation. Imam al-Ghazali says of this Name: 'He compels each thing and nothing compels Him, and He has no competitor on either count.' Coming to realise this, we are subdued. We can no longer believe in our own superiority. We understand that He is the One who elevated our rank. He benefits His creation but needs no benefit Himself. This Name is a reminder not to inflate the ego, for 'Allah seals over every heart belonging to an arrogant tyrant' (Quran 40:35). And in the second meaning — the Restorer — Al-Jabbar is the One to call upon in desperation. When the heart is broken, when a marriage is strained, when confidence has crumbled, He alone can rebuild what fell apart. He is the One who heals.
