AL QAWIYY MEANING

The All-Strong, whose strength no task diminishes and no force resists.

Al-Qawiyy carries the heavens and the earth without fatigue, executes His will without effort, and defends His servants without deploying a fraction of what He holds. Every strength in creation, muscle, wind, gravity, armies, is a borrowed trace of His.

Mentions of Al Qawiyy

From the Quran & Hadith

Arabic root
ق و يto be strong, powerful; to have full, unweakened capability; to prevail in strength

From the root qaf-waw-ya (ق و ي), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of being strong and powerful, possessing capability that never weakens, and prevailing in strength. Created strength is a loan against time: muscles tire, empires decay, stars burn out. Al-Qawiyy is strength as essence, undiminished by exertion and unthreatened by any rival.

Strength that champions the weak

Watch where the Quran invokes this Name: 'Indeed, Allah defends those who have believed' and 'Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might', Qawiyyun ʿAzīz (Quran 22:38-40). His strength enters the story on behalf of the outnumbered and the driven-out. The believers at Badr, a third the size of their enemy, learned what it means to have Al-Qawiyy in the ranks. Might, in His hands, is mercy's bodyguard.

Gentle despite omnipotence

'Allah is Subtle with His servants; He gives provision to whom He wills. And He is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might' (Quran 42:19). The pairing of laṭīf and qawiyy in one verse is a portrait: infinite strength choosing gentleness. Creatures are harsh in proportion to their insecurity; the truly Strong has nothing to prove, so His touch on His servants is subtle even while His grip on the universe is absolute.

From the Quran
وَلَيَنصُرَنَّ ٱللَّهُ مَن يَنصُرُهُۥٓ ۗ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَقَوِىٌّ عَزِيزٌ

Wa la-yanṣuranna-llāhu man yanṣuruh. Inna-llāha la-Qawiyyun ʿAzīz.

And Allah will surely support those who support Him. Indeed, Allah is Powerful and Exalted in Might.

Quran 22:40 (Al-Hajj)
ٱللَّهُ لَطِيفٌۢ بِعِبَادِهِۦ يَرْزُقُ مَن يَشَآءُ ۖ وَهُوَ ٱلْقَوِىُّ ٱلْعَزِيزُ

Allāhu laṭīfun bi-ʿibādihi yarzuqu man yashā', wa huwa-l-Qawiyyu-l-ʿAzīz.

Allah is Subtle with His servants; He gives provision to whom He wills. And He is the Powerful, the Exalted in Might.

Quran 42:19 (Ash-Shura)
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلرَّزَّاقُ ذُو ٱلْقُوَّةِ ٱلْمَتِينُ

Inna-llāha huwa-r-Razzāqu dhu-l-quwwati-l-matīn.

Indeed, it is Allah who is the Continual Provider, the firm possessor of strength.

Quran 51:58 (Adh-Dhariyat)
From the Hadith

Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than the weak believer, while there is good in both. Be eager for what benefits you, seek help from Allah, and do not give up.'

Sahih Muslim 2664
Reflection

Knowing Al-Qawiyy re-prices every intimidation. The powers that lean on you, a boss, a market, a bully, a regime, operate on borrowed strength with an expiry date, and all of it together cannot resist the One whose side you are invited onto. The believer walks into unequal rooms without a trembling heart, not because he overrates himself but because he has read who defends him. And take the Prophet's ﷺ instruction as this Name's homework: the strong believer is more beloved. Build strength in every honest register, iman first, then character, body, skills, and finances, and spend it the way Al-Qawiyy spends His: defending the weak, carrying the heavy, and staying gentle precisely where you could crush.

Allāhumma bi-quwwatika-nṣurnā wa lā ḥawla wa lā quwwata illā bik

O Allah, by Your strength give us victory; there is no might nor power except through You.
