From the Quran & Hadith
From the root qaf-sin-ta (ق س ط), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of equity, just apportionment, and giving each claimant their fair share. Qisṭ is justice in its distributive dress: the scales balanced, the shares fair. Al-Muqsit is the One whose apportioning, of provision here and verdicts hereafter, is exact to the atom's weight.
The scales of the Day
'And We place the scales of justice (al-qisṭ) for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all. And if there is even the weight of a mustard seed, We will bring it forth. And sufficient are We as accountant' (Quran 21:47). Every ledger imbalanced in this world, wages stolen, credit taken, harms unpunished, meets the scales that cannot be tipped. The mustard seed clause is the guarantee: nothing is beneath the resolution of His equity.
He loves the fair-dealers
Uniquely among the justice Names, this one comes with a declared affection: 'act justly; indeed, Allah loves those who act justly (al-muqsiṭīn)' (Quran 49:9, 5:42, 60:8). And the Prophet ﷺ described their station: 'Those who are just will be with Allah upon pulpits of light... those who are fair in their judgments, with their families, and in all they are given charge of' (Sahih Muslim 1827). Fairness in the kitchen and the contract, lifted onto pulpits of light.
Wa naḍaʿu-l-mawāzīna-l-qisṭa li-yawmi-l-qiyāmati falā tudhlamu nafsun shay'ā.
“And We place the scales of justice for the Day of Resurrection, so no soul will be treated unjustly at all.”
Wa aqsiṭū, inna-llāha yuḥibbu-l-muqsiṭīn.
“And act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.”
Abdullah ibn Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) reported the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'Those who are just will be with Allah upon pulpits of light: those who are fair in their judgments, with their families, and in all that they are given charge of.'
Note where the hadith locates the pulpits of light: judgments, families, responsibilities. Equity's real exam is not in courtrooms most of us never enter but in the daily apportioning we all do: attention between children, fairness between employees, honesty in the small invoice, the disputed inheritance where family pressure leans on the scale. Al-Muqsit watches the household scales as closely as the state's. And when you are the one shortchanged beyond remedy, close the case into His courtroom. The mustard-seed clause covers your grievance; nothing owed to you has evaporated. Believers can afford to be uncorrupted by bitterness precisely because the final accounting is not their department.
Allāhumma-jʿalnā mina-l-muqsiṭīna-lladhīna tuḥibbuhum
O Allah, make us among the equitable whom You love.
