Al Muntaqim
The Just Requiter
The Just Requiter, from whom no criminal walks away in the end.
Al-Muntaqim settles what human courts never reached. The Quran uses this Name against the mujrimūn, the hardened criminals of history who mocked every warning, and always after forbearance was refused. It is the Name that guarantees oppression has an expiry date.
Mentions of Al Muntaqim
From the Quran & Hadith
From the root nun-qaf-mim (ن ق م), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of exacting due punishment and requiting wrongdoing. Divine intiqām is nothing like human revenge: no wounded ego, no excess, no haste. It is justice arriving in full, after warnings ignored and respites exhausted, upon those who insisted on oppression.
Requital after respite
'And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord, then turns away from them? Indeed We, from the criminals, will take retribution' (Quran 32:22). Notice the sequence built into every Quranic use: reminder first, turning away second, requital last. Al-Muntaqim never ambushes; He requites those who trampled a long red carpet of chances. Firaun received years of signs before the sea closed.
Mercy's necessary partner
A god of mercy without requital would be mercy only to oppressors, and cruelty to their victims. The scholars point out that this Name protects the meaning of all the gentle Names: forgiveness is generous precisely because justice is real. And the door out is never hidden: intiqām in the Quran falls on those who die insisting; for the one who turns back, At-Tawwaab stands in the way of Al-Muntaqim, gladly.
Wa man adhlamu mimman dhukkira bi-āyāti rabbihi thumma aʿraḍa ʿanhā. Innā mina-l-mujrimīna muntaqimūn.
“And who is more unjust than one who is reminded of the verses of his Lord, then turns away from them? Indeed We, from the criminals, will take retribution.”
Yawma nabṭishu-l-baṭshata-l-kubrā innā muntaqimūn.
“The Day We will strike with the greatest assault, indeed, We will take retribution.”
Falā taḥsabanna-llāha mukhlifa waʿdihi rusulah. Inna-llāha ʿazīzun dhu-ntiqām.
“So never think that Allah will fail in His promise to His messengers. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Owner of Retribution.”
For the oppressed, this Name is oxygen. The abuser who died respected, the tyrant history books flatter, the wrong no lawyer could touch: their files transferred, unclosed, to the Owner of Retribution. Believers do not need vigilante hearts, because they know the docket is complete and the Judge cannot be lobbied. For ourselves, the Name asks a colder question: is any oppression running under my name, in my home, my business, my words? Settle it here, where settlement is cheap, an apology, a repayment, a restored right, before it is settled There at full price. And when wronged, remember the Prophet's ﷺ way: personal pardons where possible, leaving the rest with relief to Al-Muntaqim.
Allāhumma-ntaṣir li-l-madhlūmīna wa lā tajʿalnā mina-dh-dhālimīn
O Allah, grant victory to the oppressed, and do not make us among the oppressors.
