AL HALEEM MEANING

The Forbearing, the One who does not hasten punishment.

Al-Haleem sees every act of disobedience, possesses every means of immediate punishment, and yet delays. He gives time: time to realize, time to regret, time to return. His forbearance is not blindness to the sin nor weakness before the sinner; it is majesty that is never provoked into haste.

Mentions of Al Haleem

From the Quran & Hadith

Arabic root
ح ل مto be forbearing, mild, lenient, clement; to be forgiving and gentle; to manage one's temper with patience and gravity of mind

From the root ha-lam-mim (ح ل م), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of being forbearing, mild, lenient, and clement; being forgiving and gentle; and managing one's temper, calm and unprovoked, with gravity of mind. Ḥilm in the Arab ideal was the crown of character: strength that chooses not to strike. Al-Haleem possesses it absolutely.

Forbearance next to forgiveness

The Quran pairs this Name most often with forgiveness: 'And know that Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing' (Quran 2:235). The order of experience is: His ḥilm holds back the immediate consequence, and His maghfirah then erases the record for those who turn back. One Name buys the time; the other spends it on your behalf. It is also paired with Ash-Shakoor: 'Allah is Appreciative and Forbearing' (Quran 64:17), appreciating our small good while bearing our large failings.

If He seized us instantly

The Quran states plainly what His forbearance spares us: 'And if Allah were to impose blame on the people for what they have earned, He would not leave upon the earth any creature. But He defers them for a specified term' (Quran 35:45). Every breath taken after every sin is drawn inside His ḥilm. The heavens and the earth themselves persist by it: 'Indeed, Allah holds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease. And if they should cease, no one could hold them after Him. Indeed, He is Forbearing and Forgiving' (Quran 35:41).

From the Quran

Lā yu'ākhidhukumu-llāhu bi-l-laghwi fī aymānikum wa lākin yu'ākhidhukum bimā kasabat qulūbukum. Wa-llāhu Ghafūrun Ḥalīm.

Allah does not impose blame upon you for what is unintentional in your oaths, but He imposes blame upon you for what your hearts have earned. And Allah is Forgiving and Forbearing.

Quran 2:225 (Al-Baqarah)

Inna-llāha yumsiku-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍa an tazūlā. Wa la'in zālatā in amsakahumā min aḥadin min baʿdih. Innahu kāna Ḥalīman Ghafūrā.

Indeed, Allah holds the heavens and the earth, lest they cease. And if they should cease, no one could hold them after Him. Indeed, He is Forbearing and Forgiving.

Quran 35:41 (Fatir)

In tuqriḍu-llāha qarḍan ḥasanan yuḍāʿifhu lakum wa yaghfir lakum. Wa-llāhu Shakūrun Ḥalīm.

If you loan Allah a goodly loan, He will multiply it for you and forgive you. And Allah is Appreciative and Forbearing.

Quran 64:17 (At-Taghabun)
From the Hadith

Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet ﷺ would say at times of distress: 'There is no deity except Allah, the Magnificent, the Forbearing. There is no deity except Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne. There is no deity except Allah, Lord of the heavens and Lord of the earth and Lord of the Noble Throne.'

Sahih al-Bukhari 6345
Reflection

Every one of us is a lifelong beneficiary of ḥilm. Count the wrongs you committed knowingly and were not seized for; the delay you lived inside was Al-Haleem's gift, and its purpose was your return, not your comfort. Forbearance misread as approval is the most dangerous misreading in a life. Then pass the quality on, because ḥilm is among the most beloved traits a believer can carry. The Prophet ﷺ told a man: you have two qualities Allah loves, forbearance and deliberateness. When you hold power over someone who wronged you, an employee, a child, a debtor, and you choose gentleness with full ability to strike, you are practicing, at human scale, the very Name that has been practiced upon you all your life.

Lā ilāha illa-llāhu-l-ʿAdhīmu-l-Ḥalīm, lā ilāha illa-llāhu rabbu-l-ʿarshi-l-ʿadhīm

There is no deity except Allah, the Magnificent, the Forbearing. There is no deity except Allah, Lord of the Mighty Throne.
