AS SABOOR MEANING

The Most Patient, who is defied by the very tongues He keeps moist.

As-Saboor completes the ninety-nine as their fitting seal: the Name under which all His other mercies get their time to work. He could settle every account tonight; instead He waits, sends rain on deniers, extends decades to rebels, and holds the door while the wandering find their way home.

Mentions of As Saboor

From the Quran & Hadith

Arabic root
ص ب رto be patient, steadfast, enduring; to restrain and persevere without haste

From the root sad-ba-ra (ص ب ر), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of patience, steadfastness, endurance, and self-restraint without haste. As-Saboor, in the intensive form, is patience beyond all measure: He hears rebellion daily from those He feeds hourly, and does not hasten the account. His patience differs from ours in kind: ours strains against weakness; His flows from omnipotence, unforced and serene.

No one more patient than Allah

The Prophet ﷺ said: 'No one is more patient upon hurtful words he hears than Allah: they attribute to Him a son, while He grants them wellbeing and provision' (Sahih al-Bukhari 6099). Sit with the scale of that sentence: the gravest insult conceivable, answered daily with sunrise, bread, and health for the insulters. Every human patience frays; His carries civilizations of ingratitude without a tremor.

The patience He asks returns His own

The Quran commands the believer's sabr in the vocabulary of companionship: 'And be patient, and your patience is not but through Allah' (Quran 16:127); 'Indeed, Allah is with the patient' (Quran 2:153). Even our sabr is on loan from As-Saboor, and it is repaid at the Names' most lavish rate: 'Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account' (Quran 39:10). Every other reward is measured; patience's is poured.

From the Quran

Yā ayyuha-lladhīna āmanu-staʿīnū bi-ṣ-ṣabri wa-ṣ-ṣalāh. Inna-llāha maʿa-ṣ-ṣābirīn.

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

Quran 2:153 (Al-Baqarah)
إِنَّمَا يُوَفَّى ٱلصَّـٰبِرُونَ أَجْرَهُم بِغَيْرِ حِسَابٍ

Innamā yuwaffa-ṣ-ṣābirūna ajrahum bi-ghayri ḥisāb.

Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account.

Quran 39:10 (Az-Zumar)
وَٱصْبِرْ وَمَا صَبْرُكَ إِلَّا بِٱللَّهِ

Wa-ṣbir wa mā ṣabruka illā bi-llāh.

And be patient, and your patience is not but through Allah.

Quran 16:127 (An-Nahl)
From the Hadith

Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) reported the Prophet ﷺ said: 'No one is more patient upon hurtful words he hears than Allah: they attribute to Him a son, then He grants them wellbeing and provision.'

Sahih al-Bukhari 6099
Reflection

The ninety-nine end where every seeker eventually arrives: needing patience, for the path, the people, and oneself. As-Saboor has been patient with you through every year of half-hearted worship and repeated returns; extending that patience onward, to the slow child, the aging parent, the infuriating colleague, your own crawling progress, is walking in the Name that watched over all your own delays. And take its final secret with you: your sabr is not self-generated. 'Your patience is not but through Allah' (16:127). When endurance runs out, its Source has not; ask As-Saboor for the next hour's supply, then the next. That is how His people cross deserts: not carrying all the water, but walking beside the Well.

Calling on Allah by this Name

Rabbanā afrigh ʿalaynā ṣabran wa thabbit aqdāmanā wa-nṣurnā ʿala-l-qawmi-l-kāfirīn

Our Lord, pour upon us patience, plant firmly our feet, and give us victory over the disbelieving people.
