Zakat is 2.5% of qualifying wealth held for one lunar year. Indian Muslims can claim donations to 80G-registered charities as tax deductions under section 80G of the Income Tax Act.
The Indian nisab
Around INR 35,000-50,000 depending on silver spot. Use the silver-based nisab.
Gold jewellery
A particularly important category for Indian Muslims given the cultural prominence of gold. The four schools differ on jewellery worn personally by women: the Hanafi position (followed by most Indian Muslims) is that women's gold above the nisab is zakatable each year; the Shafi'i, Maliki, and Hanbali positions hold that personal-use gold is excluded.
Agricultural land
Land you farm or rent out is itself not zakatable, but the harvest is subject to ushr (a 10% or 5% tithe on crops, depending on irrigation method) at the time of each harvest. The cash income from rented agricultural land becomes zakatable on the standard 2.5% basis after one lunar year.
Where to give in India
These are well-known India charities that collect and distribute zakat. We name them so you can verify them; we don't endorse one over another — check each one's audited accounts and current projects before giving.
