Zakat calculator for Canada
Zakat in Canadian dollars, with notes on RRSPs, TFSAs, RESPs, and CRA-registered Muslim charities.
Open the calculator
The same five-minute interactive zakat calculator, with CAD as the default currency. Enter your wealth, see the zakat amount.
Zakat is 2.5% of qualifying wealth held for one lunar year. Canadian Muslims can claim donations to CRA-registered Muslim charities as tax deductions; pick the charity first, then make the deductible donation rather than calculating both separately.
The Canadian nisab
Around CAD 500-700 depending on silver spot. Use the silver-based nisab.
RRSPs, TFSAs, and RESPs
TFSAs are immediately zakatable each year because you can withdraw without penalty. RRSPs and RESPs are debated: the majority view is that they're zakatable on the after-tax, after-penalty amount you could actually withdraw, since the money is constructively yours. The calculator surfaces both positions.
Crypto and tech equity
Common Canadian Muslim wealth profile. Cryptocurrency is zakatable at current market value. Vested stock options from a tech employer are zakatable on the spread (current market price minus strike price). Unvested options are not yet in your possession and so are not zakatable until they vest.
Where to give in Canada
These are well-known Canada charities that collect and distribute zakat. We name them so you can verify them; we don't endorse one over another — check each one's audited accounts and current projects before giving.
