The Creator of Harm's Decree
The One by whose decree every adversity arrives, measured and purposeful.
Ad-Daarr names a hard truth mercifully: harm is not a rogue force, a rival power, or blind chance. Illness, loss, and hardship move only by His permission, in His measure, inside His wisdom, which means every affliction has an address for appeal and an expiry date.

From the Quran & Hadith
From the root dad-ra-ra (ض ر ر), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of harm, affliction, and adversity. Ad-Daarr is traditionally listed with An-Naafi as an inseparable pair, and the scholars insist on reciting them together: the One by whose decree harm exists is the same One by whose decree all benefit flows, and neither escapes His wisdom.
Why this Name is a comfort
A world where harm strikes randomly is a horror; a world where harm answers to the Most Merciful is a hospital. 'And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him; and if He touches you with good, then He is over all things competent' (Quran 6:17). The same hand holds both touches, so the afflicted are never in enemy territory. The scholars add: harm from His hand carries purposes, purification of sins, elevation of ranks, awakening of hearts, that random suffering could never carry.
The manners of Ayyub
The Quran shows the etiquette of this Name in its most tested servant. Ayyub (peace be upon him) attributed the harm without accusation: 'Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful' (Quran 21:83). Harm named, mercy affirmed, no bitterness between them. And the answer came: 'So We responded to him and removed what afflicted him of adversity, and We gave him back his family and the like thereof with them' (21:84).
Wa in yamsaska-llāhu bi-ḍurrin falā kāshifa lahu illā hū, wa in yamsaska bi-khayrin fa-huwa ʿalā kulli shay'in qadīr.
“And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him; and if He touches you with good, then He is over all things competent.”
Wa Ayyūba idh nādā rabbahu annī massaniya-ḍ-ḍurru wa anta arḥamu-r-rāḥimīn.
“And Job, when he called to his Lord: Indeed, adversity has touched me, and You are the Most Merciful of the merciful.”
Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) reported the Prophet ﷺ said: 'Know that if the whole nation gathered to harm you with something, they would not harm you except with what Allah had written against you; the pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.'
The hadith of Ibn Abbas is this Name's shield: all humanity together cannot scratch you outside what was written. Enemies shrink to instruments; conspiracies lose their omnipotence; anxiety about 'what people might do' meets its theological ceiling. Only one Being's decree touches you, and He is the Most Merciful of the merciful. When harm does land, follow Ayyub's protocol: name it to Allah honestly, accuse Him of nothing, and couple the complaint with praise. And never read this Name alone; it walks with An-Naafi eternally. The Physician who prescribed the bitter dose is the same one preparing the cure, and He has never once prescribed out of malice.
