What Does Kayfa Haluk Mean? Meaning and How to Reply
When to say it
This is the question that naturally follows the salam. Hal means state or condition, so you are literally asking, how is your state? It works everywhere English uses, how are you?
Arabic changes the ending for who you address. Kayfa haluk (حَالُكَ) to a man, kayfa haluki (حَالُكِ) to a woman, kayfa halukum (حَالُكُمْ) to a group. In relaxed everyday speech you will often hear it shortened to kif halak or kif al-hal.
Asking about a believer's wellbeing is part of the brotherhood the Prophet ﷺ described, the believers in their mutual love and mercy are like one body (Sahih al-Bukhari 6011). The question is small, the bond it maintains is not.
alhamdulillah bikhayr
Praise be to Allah, I am well.
A Muslim answers this question with gratitude first. Alhamdulillah on its own is a complete answer. Bikhayr, in wellness, adds the detail. Then return the question, wa anta, and you? (wa anti to a woman)
