What Does Assalamu Alaikum Mean? Meaning and How to Reply
When to say it
This is the greeting Muslims give one another at every meeting, walking into the masjid, answering the phone, joining a gathering, or passing a brother or sister on the street. It is a du'a, you are asking Allah to place peace upon the person in front of you.
Say it first when you arrive. The Prophet ﷺ taught that the one who initiates the salam is closest to Allah, and that spreading salam spreads love between believers (Sahih Muslim 54). You do not need to know the person, the sunnah is to greet those you know and those you do not know.
The Quran instructs us to answer a greeting with something better, or at least its equal (Surah an-Nisa 4:86). That is why the fullest reply adds the mercy and blessings of Allah.
wa alaykumu s-salamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh
And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah, and His blessings.
The minimum reply is wa alaykumu s-salam. Adding wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh answers with something better, exactly as Surah an-Nisa 4:86 encourages. If the greeter already said the full form, match it in full.
