What Does Ahlan wa Sahlan Mean? Meaning and How to Reply
When to say it
This is the classical Arabic welcome. The full old expression means, you have come to your own people (ahl), and your feet have found easy, level ground (sahl). In one word, welcome.
You will hear it at the masjid door, at an Arab home, in shops, and anywhere a host wants to put a guest at ease. It is warm and universal, use it when someone arrives at your home, joins your circle at the masjid, or is new to the community.
It is not a religious formula, so it pairs naturally with the salam. Greet with as-salamu alaykum first, then welcome the person with ahlan wa sahlan.

Say ahlan biki to a woman and ahlan bikum to a group. A simple ahlan back, or shukran (thank you), is also perfectly natural.
