What Does Alhamdulillah Mean? Meaning and How to Reply
When to say it
Alhamdulillah is the second ayah of Surah al-Fatiha, the surah every Muslim recites in every prayer. Al-hamd is praise joined with gratitude, and lillah means it belongs to Allah, all of it, always.
Say it when asked how you are, when you finish eating, when good news arrives, and when you simply notice a blessing. Say it also in hardship, the Prophet ﷺ praised Allah in every state, and the believer's affair is all good (Sahih Muslim 2999).
It is also the sunnah after sneezing. The one who sneezes says alhamdulillah, and the one who hears it replies with a du'a of mercy (Sahih al-Bukhari 6224).

May Allah have mercy on you, the reply to a sneeze.
In ordinary talk, alhamdulillah needs no reply, though many affirm it by repeating it. After a sneeze the exchange is sunnah: the sneezer says alhamdulillah, you reply yarhamukallah, and the sneezer answers yahdikumullahu wa yuslihu balakum, may Allah guide you and set your affairs right (Sahih al-Bukhari 6224).
