What Does Jazakallah Khair Mean? Meaning and How to Reply
When to say it
Say it whenever someone does you a kindness, hands you a date at iftar, gives you a lift home from the masjid, teaches you an ayah, or simply holds the door. Instead of thanking with your own words, you hand the matter to Allah and ask Him to repay them.
The Prophet ﷺ said, whoever has a favour done for him and says to the doer, jazakallahu khayran, has done his utmost in praise (Jami at-Tirmidhi 2035, graded sahih).
Address forms matter in Arabic. Jazaka is for one man, jazaki (جَزَاكِ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا) for one woman, and jazakum (جَزَاكُمُ اللَّهُ خَيْرًا) for a group. Adding khayran, with good, completes the du'a, so prefer the full phrase over a bare jazakallah.

And you as well, may He reward you too.
Wa iyyaki to a woman, wa iyyakum to a group. Some also reply with wa anta fa jazakallahu khayran, and you, may Allah reward you with good. Both return the du'a to the one who made it.
