AL MUHIY MEANING

The Giver of Life, who alone quickens dust, hearts, and lands.

Al-Muhiy gave you life once in the womb, renews it with every heartbeat you do not command, revives the dead earth each spring before your eyes, and will give life the final time when the graves open. Life, everywhere it flickers, is His act in progress.

Mentions of Al Muhiy

From the Quran & Hadith

Arabic root
ح ي يto live, to be alive; to give life, animate, revive; to quicken what was dead

From the root ha-ya-ya (ح ي ي), the root of life itself, which carries the classical Arabic connotations of living and being alive; giving life, animating, and reviving; and quickening what was dead. Al-Muhiy is the only source life has ever had: no laboratory, no chance process, no parent gives life; they only pass along what He ignites.

The argument Ibrahim won with one sentence

When the king argued with Ibrahim (peace be upon him) about his Lord, Ibrahim opened with this Name: 'My Lord is the one who gives life and causes death' (Quran 2:258). The king claimed he too could spare and execute, so Ibrahim moved the demonstration out of reach: then bring the sun from the west. Life-giving is the credential no pretender has ever forged, which is why the Quran rests its case for tawhid and resurrection upon it again and again.

Watch the rehearsal every year

'And Allah has sent down rain from the sky and given life thereby to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who listen' (Quran 16:65). And explicitly: 'So observe the effects of the mercy of Allah, how He gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed, that same one is the Giver of Life to the dead, and He is over all things competent' (Quran 30:50). Every spring is a public rehearsal of the resurrection, staged annually for anyone still doubting the main performance.

From the Quran

Fa-ndhur ilā āthāri raḥmati-llāhi kayfa yuḥyi-l-arḍa baʿda mawtihā. Inna dhālika la-muḥyi-l-mawtā. Wa huwa ʿalā kulli shay'in qadīr.

So observe the effects of the mercy of Allah, how He gives life to the earth after its lifelessness. Indeed, that same one is the Giver of Life to the dead, and He is over all things competent.

Quran 30:50 (Ar-Rum)
رَبِّىَ ٱلَّذِى يُحْىِۦ وَيُمِيتُ

Rabbiya-lladhī yuḥyī wa yumīt.

My Lord is the one who gives life and causes death.

Quran 2:258 (Al-Baqarah)

Yā ayyuha-lladhīna āmanu-stajībū lillāhi wa li-r-rasūli idhā daʿākum limā yuḥyīkum.

O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life.

Quran 8:24 (Al-Anfal)
Reflection

There are two lives, and Al-Muhiy gives both. The first animates the body; the second animates the heart, and the Quran calls its own message exactly that: a call 'to that which gives you life' (8:24). A person can be biologically thriving and spiritually flatlined; revelation is the defibrillator, and the Reviver holds the paddles. Whoever has felt a dead heart quicken during one ayah knows this Name from the inside. So bring Him your deadnesses by name: the numb prayer, the cold marriage, the extinguished ambition for good. The earth He revives every spring never files a request; you can. And live as a small distributor of revival, speaking the word that revives courage, faith, and hope in others, on behalf of the One who revives everything.

Calling on Allah by this Name

Yā Muḥyī, aḥyi qalbī bi-nūri kitābik

O Giver of Life, give my heart life by the light of Your Book.
