What Does Ayah (آيَة) Mean in the Quran?
The root points to a sign or marker. An ayah is a sign that points beyond itself, to its Sender.
Counted from the Uthmani text bundled with this site: the singular ayah and plural ayat with their article, prefixes, and attached pronouns (ayatuna, bi-ayatillah, and the rest).
Inside the Quran
Every verse of the Quran is called an ayah because it is a sign of Allah, and the Quran uses the same word for the sun, the moon, the rain, and the alternation of night and day. Verse and sunrise carry the same label on purpose.
The plural ayat appears constantly in phrases like ayatillah (the signs of Allah) and bi-ayatina (with Our signs). When you read the word, both meanings, verse and sign, are usually in play.
“We do not abrogate a verse or cause it to be forgotten except that We bring forth [one] better than it or similar to it. Do you not know that Allāh is over all things competent?”
“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquility in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.”
“Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding -”
