What Does Taqabbal Allah Mean? Meaning and How to Reply
When to say it
This is the greeting the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ exchanged when they met on the day of Eid (recorded by Ibn Hajar in Fath al-Bari with a sound chain). After a month of fasting, or the days of Hajj and sacrifice, you ask Allah to accept the worship of both of you.
Use it on Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha, and more broadly after shared acts of worship, when the masjid finishes Tarawih, after a khatm of the Quran, or when someone returns from Umrah or Hajj.
Notice what the phrase does. Instead of congratulating each other on the celebration alone, it turns both hearts back to the point of the worship, acceptance with Allah.
taqabbal Allahu minna wa minkum
May Allah accept from us and from you.
The reply is the same du'a returned. Many also answer Ameen, then repeat the phrase, or add Eid Mubarak, a blessed Eid. All of these are fine, the heart of the exchange is the du'a for acceptance.
