Al Muqaddim
The Expediter
The Expediter, who brings forward whom He wills, as He wills.
Al-Muqaddim sets the ordering of everything: who is guided early and who late, which effort ripens now and which waits, who walks ahead and who behind. Precedence in every queue of existence is His assignment, not chance's.
Mentions of Al Muqaddim
From the Quran & Hadith
From the root qaf-dal-mim (ق د م), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of preceding, advancing, and bringing forward; promoting and granting precedence. Al-Muqaddim brings forward whom and what He wills: a person to guidance before his peers, a provision before its expected time, a victory before its visible means. He is known from the Prophet's ﷺ own dua, always beside His counterpart, Al-Muakhir.
From the Prophet's ﷺ night prayer
This Name reaches us in the Prophet's ﷺ own words, sealing his night supplication: 'You are al-Muqaddim and You are al-Muakhir; there is no deity except You' (Sahih al-Bukhari 1120). The pair belongs together like inhale and exhale: whoever advances some things necessarily defers others, and both motions issue from one wisdom. The scholars therefore counsel reciting and contemplating these two Names together.
Orderings we cannot see
The Quran shows His ordering upending human expectations constantly: younger brothers raised over elder (Yusuf), shepherds advanced over kings (Dawud), the persecuted of Makkah brought forward to lead nations. 'And We made them leaders guiding by Our command' (Quran 21:73). When Al-Muqaddim advances someone, no withholder can hold them back; the queue of the world obeys a hand the world cannot see.
Wa li-kulli ummatin ajal. Fa-idhā jā'a ajaluhum lā yasta'khirūna sāʿatan wa lā yastaqdimūn.
“And for every nation is a specified term. So when their time has come, they will not remain behind an hour, nor will they precede it.”
Wa jaʿalnāhum a'immatan yahdūna bi-amrinā.
“And We made them leaders guiding by Our command.”
From the Prophet's ﷺ night prayer: 'You are al-Muqaddim and You are al-Muakhir; there is no deity except You.'
Comparison sickness, the ache of watching peers advance while you wait, has a theological cure: the queue is administered. The classmate promoted first, the friend married first, the rival funded first, were brought forward by Al-Muqaddim for reasons inside His wisdom, and your own advancement is neither lost nor late; it is scheduled. Ask Him, then, for the precedences that matter: to be advanced in guidance, in sincerity, in the ranks of the Hereafter, the queues where position is worth coveting. And when He does advance you, in wealth, knowledge, or standing, remember the Name that moved you forward, and use the front of the line to pull others along.
Allāhumma qaddimnā ilā kulli khayrin wa lā tu'akhkhirnā ʿan bābik
O Allah, advance us toward every good, and do not hold us back from Your door.
- Sahih al-Bukhari 1120
- Quran 7:34
