Al-Fattaah is the opener, the revealer, and the granter of success. He opens or locks His doors of mercy to whom He pleases. Through His guidance, whatever is unclear becomes clear. He has the best judgment and holds the keys to victory and success.

From the Quran & Hadith
From the root fa-ta-ha (ف ت ح), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of opening, unlocking, and unfolding; making victorious; revealing, informing, explaining, and making clear; and judging, deciding, granting, and permitting. In Arabic, fath means to open, and Al-Fattaah is the Opener in a perpetual, ever-lasting form.
What does He open?
Everything that opens, opens by Him. In the previous Name we saw that He holds the key to our sustenance as Ar-Razzaaq, so He is the opener of provisions. He opens the doors of mercy: the Prophet ﷺ taught that when the month of Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are locked, and the devils are chained (Sahih al-Bukhari 1899). He also opens guidance to the one who is lost: revealing the unseen, a path untrodden. Sometimes we see a thing as impossible, our minds unable to see it any other way, until Al-Fattaah, in all His glory, clears our minds and opens the possibility. What seemed sealed was only waiting for the One who makes what seemed impossible, possible.
Openings are also tests
Allah opens doors as tests for both the believers and those who turn away. For some, He opens access to fame, wealth, or power just to see how they respond. Of those who forgot what they had been reminded of, the Quran says: 'We opened to them the doors of every good thing, until, when they rejoiced in what they were given, We seized them suddenly, and they were then in despair' (Quran 6:44). An open door is not always an approval; it is always an exam.
Once in the Quran
As a Name, Al-Fattaah appears exactly once, in Surah Saba: the Prophet ﷺ is told to say that our Lord will gather us and then judge between us in truth, 'and He is the Knowing Judge', al-Fattaahu-l-Aleem (Quran 34:26). Here the opening is a judgment: on that Day every dispute is opened, laid bare, and decided with perfect knowledge.
Qul yajmaʿu baynanā rabbunā thumma yaftaḥu baynanā bi-l-ḥaqqi wa huwa-l-Fattāḥu-l-ʿAlīm.
“Say, Our Lord will bring us together; then He will judge between us in truth. And He is the Knowing Judge.”
Mā yaftaḥi-llāhu li-n-nāsi min raḥmatin falā mumsika lahā, wa mā yumsik falā mursila lahu min baʿdih, wa huwa-l-ʿAzīzu-l-Ḥakīm.
“Whatever Allah grants to people of mercy, none can withhold it; and whatever He withholds, none can release it thereafter. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.”
The Prophet ﷺ taught that on entering the masjid we say: Allāhumma-ftaḥ lī abwāba raḥmatik, 'O Allah, open for me the gates of Your mercy', and on leaving: Allāhumma innī as'aluka min faḍlik, 'O Allah, I ask You from Your bounty.' Entering, we seek His mercy; leaving for the world, we seek His grace and provision.
Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, relaying from his Lord: 'Indeed Allah Most High says: I am as My slave thinks of Me, and I am with him when He calls upon Me.'
By being vulnerable to oneself, by opening up towards Allah, you give yourself the opportunity for Him to open His doors of mercy for you. From this Name we recognize that He is the only one we truly need to rely upon: whatever He opens for us, no one can shut, and whatever He shuts, no one can open (Quran 35:2). If you are feeling stuck, or struggling to make a decision, pray salat al-istikhara and ask Al-Fattaah to open your heart to the right choice. He is the best judge, who knows whether a thing will benefit you in your deen, relationships, or livelihood. And keep the masjid duʿāʾ alive: every entrance a request for mercy to open, every exit a request for bounty, until asking the Opener becomes the reflex of your comings and goings.
