Al Baatin
The Intimately Hidden
The Hidden, veiled from sight, nearer than the jugular vein.
Al-Baatin completes the quartet of 57:3: manifest through His signs, hidden in His essence. No eye reaches Him in this world, no mind encompasses Him ever, and yet nothing is more inward to your existence than the One sustaining it from within its every layer.

From the Quran & Hadith
From the root ba-ta-nun (ب ط ن), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of inwardness, hiddenness, and concealment, and of knowing a thing's interior. Al-Baatin is hidden from the senses yet nearer than the self: veiled from eyes, not by distance but by intensity, while knowing the inside of every inside.
Hidden, therefore sought
The Prophet ﷺ glossed the Name: 'You are al-Baatin, so there is nothing beyond You' (Sahih Muslim 2713); dūnaka, nothing nearer, nothing on the other side of Him. His hiddenness is not absence but excess: as the eye cannot stare into the sun, minds cannot encompass His essence. So He revealed His Names and His signs, everything of Him we need, while His essence remains the treasure that makes Paradise's promised vision the ultimate reward.
Nearer than the jugular
'And We have already created man and know what his soul whispers to him, and We are closer to him than his jugular vein' (Quran 50:16). The Hidden One is the Intimate One: He hears the prayer never voiced, knows the grief behind the composed face, registers the temptation resisted in perfect secrecy. Whoever has a hidden life, and everyone does, has a Lord already resident in it.
Huwa-l-Awwalu wa-l-Ākhiru wa-dh-Dhāhiru wa-l-Bāṭin, wa huwa bi-kulli shay'in ʿalīm.
“He is the First and the Last, the Manifest and the Hidden, and He is, of all things, Knowing.”
Wa naḥnu aqrabu ilayhi min ḥabli-l-warīd.
“And We are closer to him than his jugular vein.”
Lā tudrikuhu-l-abṣāru wa huwa yudriku-l-abṣār, wa huwa-l-Laṭīfu-l-Khabīr.
“Vision perceives Him not, but He perceives all vision; and He is the Subtle, the Acquainted.”
Your inner life, the running commentary no one hears, the wounds never displayed, the worship no one witnessed, is Al-Baatin's home terrain. Nothing interior is solitary confinement; the Hidden One inhabits the hidden layer of you with complete, gentle knowledge. For the lonely, this is the Name that ends the aloneness arithmetic: the inner room always had Two in it. So invest in your bāṭin the way people invest in facades. Polish the secret self: the private prayer, the concealed charity, the forgiven grudge no one knows you dropped. The scholars say a person's rank with Allah tracks his hidden life, not his public one, because that is the wing of the house where Al-Baatin receives His guests.
Allāhumma ṭahhir bāṭinanā ḥattā yakūna khayran min dhāhirinā
O Allah, purify our inward selves until they are better than our outward selves.
