Mentions of Al Baari

From the Quran & Hadith

Arabic root
ب ر أto create out of nothing, to bring into existence free and clear of any other thing, to be free of fault or blemish

From the root ba-ra-hamza (ب ر أ), which carries the classical Arabic connotations of creating and forming out of nothing, manifesting, evolving one thing from pre-existing matter, and being individual, free, and clear of another thing, free of fault or blemish. Al-Baari creates without model or similarity, in perfect harmony and proportion, without any fault.

Second of the Names of creation

Al-Baari sits between Al-Khaaliq and Al-Musawwir in the trio of creation Names gathered in Quran 59:24. Where Al-Khaaliq is the planner who creates from nothing, Al-Baari is the One who initiates and brings into existence, turning decree into reality. The distinction matters: many things are planned and never made. With Allah, nothing decreed fails to arrive.

The root of Al-Baari also carries freedom from fault. What He produces is clear of defect in its making. The Quran directs our attention to this: 'Verily, We created man in the best of moulds' (Quran 95:4), and, of the mountains that seem so fixed, 'the work of Allah, who perfected all things' (Quran 27:88). Perfection of make is His signature.

From the Quran

Huwa-llāhu-l-Khāliqu-l-Bāri'u-l-Muṣawwir, lahu-l-asmā'u-l-ḥusnā. Yusabbiḥu lahu mā fi-s-samāwāti wa-l-arḍ, wa huwa-l-ʿAzīzu-l-Ḥakīm.

He is Allah, the Creator, the Producer, the Fashioner; to Him belong the best names. Whatever is in the heavens and earth is exalting Him. And He is the Exalted in Might, the Wise.

Quran 59:24 (Al-Hashr)
ٱلَّذِى خَلَقَكَ فَسَوَّىٰكَ فَعَدَلَكَ

Alladhī khalaqaka fa-sawwāka fa-ʿadalak.

Who created you, proportioned you, and balanced you?

Quran 82:7 (Al-Infitar)
لَقَدْ خَلَقْنَا ٱلْإِنسَـٰنَ فِىٓ أَحْسَنِ تَقْوِيمٍ

Laqad khalaqna-l-insāna fī aḥsani taqwīm.

We have certainly created man in the best of stature.

Quran 95:4 (At-Tin)
Reflection

At times we feel insecure about our physical traits. Al-Baari answers that insecurity at the root: you were made by the One whose making has no fault, in the best of moulds (Quran 95:4). We cannot change the vessel we were given, and there should be no burning desire to. Learn to accept it, look after it, and be thankful for what carries you through this life. This does not happen overnight, and there is no guilt in not feeling it immediately. But the suffering we experience in our self-image lives in the mind, and it differs from reality. If we are honest, much of it comes through comparison and the way we treat ourselves. Rewrite the story: define yourself by devotion, compassion, wisdom, and resourcefulness, internal values that need no audience, no competition, and cannot be taken from you by a trend.
