Jumu'ah, the weekly gathering
The Quran calls a whole surah by its name. Why Jumu'ah is the most important hour of the Muslim week, and how to arrive ready.
Outline
- 1
The command to hasten
When the call is made for the Friday prayer, hasten to the remembrance of Allah and leave business (Jumu'ah 62:9). Not stroll, hasten. The Prophet ﷺ said angels stand at the masjid doors recording who comes when. By the time the imam ascends the minbar, they close the books (Bukhari 929).
- 2
Ghusl, miswak, perfume, best clothes
Five preparations the Prophet ﷺ taught for Jumu'ah (Bukhari 880, 881). Bathing, miswak, perfume, the best clothes, walking. The Muslim who arrives well-prepared is treated as visiting the King.
- 3
The hour of acceptance
The Prophet ﷺ said: there is an hour on Friday in which no Muslim asks Allah for anything except He grants it (Muslim 852). Many scholars place it after Asr, before Maghrib. Spend that hour in dua. Most do not.
Closing line
Next Friday, arrive thirty minutes earlier than last week. Use the difference for dua and Quran.
Aisha (RA) reported: the Prophet's ﷺ khutbahs were of moderate length and his prayers were short (Sahih Muslim 869). Aim for fifteen to twenty minutes. Two sections separated by a brief sitting is the Sunnah pattern.
