Khushu, presence in prayer

Allah opens Surah al-Mu'minun with the trait that distinguishes successful believers. Practical steps to bring khushu back when it leaves.

Centrepiece
Surah al-Mu'minun 23:1-2

Outline

  1. 1

    Successful believers, defined

Allah says: successful are the believers, those who have khushu in their prayer (Mu'minun 23:1-2). Out of every quality He could have named first, He named the quality of presence in salah.

  2. 2

Khushu is built outside the prayer

You cannot stand in front of Allah for five minutes when your heart has been everywhere except Him for the previous five hours. Khushu is what your day deposits into the salah. A day full of dhikr brings a salah full of presence.

  3. 3

    Practical steps

Arrive early enough to settle. Slow the Fatihah. Pause between verses. Picture the meanings. Use the duas in ruku and sujud the Prophet ﷺ used. Notice the moment your mind drifts and bring it back without self-anger.

Closing line

Allahumma a'inni ala dhikrika wa shukrika wa husni ibadatik — O Allah, help me remember You, thank You, and worship You beautifully.

Aisha (RA) reported: the Prophet's ﷺ khutbahs were of moderate length and his prayers were short (Sahih Muslim 869). Aim for fifteen to twenty minutes. Two sections separated by a brief sitting is the Sunnah pattern.
