How to pray Jumu'ah
Jumu'ah is the weekly congregational prayer that replaces Dhuhr for men on Fridays. The imam delivers a khutbah (sermon) in two parts, with a short sitting between them, then leads the prayer. It is only two rak'ahs but comes with unique etiquette: arriving early, wearing clean clothes, wearing perfume (for men), using siwak, and listening silently to the khutbah. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The best day the sun rises upon is Friday' (Sahih Muslim 854).
At Dhuhr's time, on Fridays
Aloud in both rak'ahs.
2 fard, 2+2 sunnah after

- Ṣalāt al-Ibrāhīmiyyah· Durood on the Prophet ﷺTashahhud

O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and the family of Ibrahim. You are indeed the Praiseworthy, the Glorious. رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي ٱلدُّنْيَا حَسَنَة، وَفِي ٱلْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَة، وَقِنَا عَذَابَ ٱلنَّار
Rabbanā ātinā fid-dunyā ḥasanah, wa fil-ākhirati ḥasanah, wa qinā ʿadhāban-nār
Our Lord, give us good in this world and good in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of the Fire.
- The closing salāmSalām
Turn your head to the right and say the salām, then to the left and say it again:

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāh
Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah.
The prayer is complete.
A note on variants. Recitations follow the most widely shared Sunnah wording. Some madhabs use slightly different phrasing for Dua Sana, At-Taḥiyyāt, the closing dua, or hand placement during qiyām. All authentic variants are valid, pray in the way your local imam teaches.
What makes Jumu'ah distinct
- 1
Replaces Dhuhr for every adult male Muslim able to attend. Women may attend or pray Dhuhr at home.
- 2
Only two rak'ahs (not four like Dhuhr).
- 3
Preceded by a two-part khutbah from the imam. Listening silently to the khutbah is part of the worship.
- 4
Both rak'ahs are prayed aloud.
- 5
Recommended to arrive early. The earlier you arrive, the greater the reward.
- 6
There is a special hour on Friday in which du'a is answered, most scholars place it in the last hour before Maghrib.
Special steps for Jumu'ah
Recommended: read Surat al-Kahf on Friday
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'Whoever reads Surat al-Kahf on the day of Jumu'ah, a light shines for him from this Jumu'ah to the next.' Mustadrak al-Hakim 3392.
Send abundant salawat on the Prophet ﷺ on Friday
The Prophet ﷺ said: 'The best of your days is Friday. On it Adam was created, on it he died, and on it the Trumpet will be blown. So send abundant salawat on me that day, for your salawat will be presented to me.' Sunan Abi Dawud 1047.
FAQs about Jumu'ah
Is Jumu'ah obligatory for women?+
No, but it is permitted. Women who attend receive the full reward. A woman who prays Dhuhr at home instead has fulfilled her obligation.
What if I miss Jumu'ah?+
Pray Dhuhr as four fard rak'ahs as normal. The congregational reward is missed but the obligation is not.
What should I do during the khutbah?+
Listen silently. The Prophet ﷺ said: 'If you say to your companion during the khutbah, "Be quiet," you have spoken idly.' Sahih al-Bukhari 934. No phone, no conversation, no prayer during the khutbah.
How early should I arrive?+
The Prophet ﷺ said the earlier you come, the greater the reward: the first hour like offering a camel, the second a cow, the third a ram, the fourth a hen, the fifth an egg. Sahih al-Bukhari 881.
Do I pray sunnah before Jumu'ah?+
There is no confirmed sunnah before Jumu'ah like there is before Dhuhr. Pray Tahiyyatul Masjid (2 rak'ahs on entering) and any nafl you wish until the imam begins the khutbah. After Jumu'ah, 2 or 4 rak'ahs of sunnah are recommended (the 4 prayed as 2+2).
