How to pray Asr
Asr is called 'the middle prayer' in the Qur'an (2:238), and the Prophet ﷺ said whoever misses Asr, it is as if he lost his family and wealth. Four fard rak'ahs, silent. The four rak'ahs of sunnah before are not as emphasized as the Dhuhr sunnah but carry reward. Avoid delaying Asr to the very end of its window, the Prophet ﷺ called delaying it without excuse 'the prayer of the hypocrite'.
From mid-afternoon until sunset
Silent in all four rak'ahs.
4 sunnah before, 4 fard
Starts when the shadow of an object becomes equal to its length (Shafi'i, Maliki, Hanbali) or twice its length (Hanafi). Ends at sunset. In most cities the window is two to three hours.

FAQs about Asr
When exactly does Asr enter?+
The majority position is when an object's shadow equals its length (plus the shadow at noon). The Hanafi position is when the shadow is twice the length. Most apps let you pick. Barakah defaults to the Standard (majority) method.
What does 'the middle prayer' mean?+
Allah says in Surat al-Baqarah 2:238: 'Guard the prayers, and the middle prayer.' The majority of scholars say this is Asr, because it sits in the middle of the day's prayers (after two, before two).
Can I pray voluntary prayers after Asr?+
The Prophet ﷺ forbade voluntary prayer at three times: after Fajr until sunrise, at solar noon, and after Asr until sunset. Obligatory make-up prayers and the two rak'ahs after tawaf are exceptions.
How long before sunset can I still pray Asr?+
The valid window stretches to sunset, but the Prophet ﷺ called praying it in the last minutes without excuse 'the hypocrite's prayer'. Aim to pray it as soon as its time enters.
