How to pray Maghrib

المغربThe Sunset prayer

Maghrib is prayed right after sunset and has the shortest window of the five. It is the only prayer with three rak'ahs. Two rak'ahs of sunnah are offered after the fard, and these were prayed regularly by the Prophet ﷺ. The recitation in the first two rak'ahs is aloud, the third is silent, with a short tashahhud sitting in between.

Time

Immediately after sunset until the red twilight disappears

Recitation

Aloud in rak'ahs 1 and 2, silent in rak'ah 3.

Rak'ahs

3 fard, 2 sunnah after

About the time window

Starts the moment the sun's disc fully sets below the horizon and ends when the red glow on the western horizon fades into dark blue (the start of Isha). This is the shortest window of the five prayers, usually 60 to 90 minutes.

What makes Maghrib distinct

  • 1

Three rak'ahs, the only prayer with an odd fard count among the five.

  • 2

Recited aloud in the first two rak'ahs, silent in the third.

  • 3

    A brief tashahhud sitting after rak'ah 2, before standing for rak'ah 3.

  • 4

The second surah (after al-Fatihah) is usually short, as Maghrib has a tight time window.

  • 5

The 2 sunnah after are strongly recommended, usually short like al-Kafirun and al-Ikhlas.

FAQs about Maghrib

Why is Maghrib three rak'ahs?+

This is how the Prophet ﷺ prayed it. It is the only fard prayer with an odd rak'ah count. It corresponds in some interpretations to the witr of the day.

When exactly does Maghrib's window end?+

When the red twilight (shafaq ahmar) disappears on the western horizon. The majority of scholars hold this position. Hanafi scholars hold it ends when the white twilight fades, slightly later.

Are the 2 sunnah after Maghrib important?+

Very. The Prophet ﷺ said whoever prays 12 sunnah rak'ahs a day (including these 2 after Maghrib) has a house built for them in Paradise. Sahih Muslim 728.

Can I combine Maghrib with Isha?+

Yes in specific cases: while travelling, in hardship, or in continuous rain in mosque. The Prophet ﷺ combined Maghrib and Isha on the march. For daily non-travel life, pray each at its own time.
