Before sleep
Bismika-llahumma amutu wa ahya.
“In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.”
The Prophet ﷺ never slept without remembrance. Each night he blew lightly into his cupped hands, recited al-Ikhlas, al-Falaq and an-Nas and wiped over his body three times (Sahih al-Bukhari 5017), and he would not sleep before reciting Surat as-Sajdah and Surat al-Mulk (Jami at-Tirmidhi 3404).
Bismika-llahumma amutu wa ahya.
“In Your name, O Allah, I die and I live.”
Allahu la ilaha illa Huwa, al-Hayyu-l-Qayyum. La ta'khudhuhu sinatun wa la nawm. Lahu ma fi-s-samawati wa ma fi-l-ard. Man dha-lladhi yashfa'u 'indahu illa bi-idhnih.
“Allah, there is no god but He, the Living, the Self-Subsisting. Neither slumber nor sleep overtakes Him. To Him belongs what is in the heavens and what is on the earth. Who can intercede with Him except by His permission? He knows what lies before them and what is behind them, and they grasp nothing of His knowledge except what He wills. His Throne extends over the heavens and the earth, and their preservation does not tire Him. He is the Most High, the Most Great.”
Reciting this at evening protects from jinn until morning.
Qul Huwa-llahu Ahad. Allahu-s-Samad. Lam yalid wa lam yulad. Wa lam yakun lahu kufuwan ahad.
“Say: He is Allah, One. Allah, the Self-Sufficient upon whom all depend. He begets not, nor is He begotten. And there is nothing comparable to Him.”
Qul a'udhu bi Rabbi-l-falaq. Min sharri ma khalaq. Wa min sharri ghasiqin idha waqab. Wa min sharri-n-naffathati fi-l-'uqad. Wa min sharri hasidin idha hasad.
“Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of the daybreak. From the evil of what He has created. From the evil of the darkening night as it descends. From the evil of those who blow into knots. And from the evil of the envier when he envies.”
Qul a'udhu bi Rabbi-n-nas. Maliki-n-nas. Ilahi-n-nas. Min sharri-l-waswasi-l-khannas. Alladhi yuwaswisu fi suduri-n-nas. Mina-l-jinnati wa-n-nas.
“Say: I seek refuge with the Lord of mankind. The King of mankind. The God of mankind. From the evil of the whispering one who withdraws. Who whispers in the breasts of mankind. From among the jinn and mankind.”
Allahu Akbar (34 times), SubhanAllah (33 times), Alhamdulillah (33 times).
“Allah is the Greatest (34 times). Glory be to Allah (33 times). Praise be to Allah (33 times).”
Fatimah was worn out by the hand mill and asked for a servant. The Prophet ﷺ came to her and 'Ali at bedtime and taught them to say Allahu Akbar thirty-four times, SubhanAllah thirty-three times and Alhamdulillah thirty-three times when they lay down, and said it was better for them than a servant.
Allahumma 'alimal-ghaybi wash-shahadah, fatiras-samawati wal-ard, rabba kulli shay'in wa malikah, ash-hadu an la ilaha illa ant, a'udhu bika min sharri nafsi, wa min sharrish-shaytani wa sharakih, wa an aqtarifa 'ala nafsi su'an aw ajurrahu ila muslim
“O Allah, Knower of the unseen and the seen, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Lord and Owner of all things, I bear witness that there is no god but You. I seek refuge in You from the evil of my own self, from the evil of the devil and his snares, and from committing wrong against myself or bringing it upon a Muslim.”
The Prophet ﷺ taught this to Abu Bakr to say in the morning, in the evening, and when lying down to sleep.
“The Messenger believes in what has been sent down to him from his Lord, and so do the believers. Each believes in Allah, His angels, His books and His messengers: "We make no distinction between any of His messengers." And they say, "We hear and we obey. Grant us Your forgiveness, our Lord, and to You is the final return." Allah does not burden a soul beyond what it can bear. It gains whatever good it has done and suffers whatever evil it has done. "Our Lord, do not take us to task if we forget or make a mistake. Our Lord, do not place on us a burden like the one You placed on those before us. Our Lord, do not burden us with what we cannot bear. Pardon us, forgive us and have mercy on us. You are our Protector, so help us against the disbelieving people."”
The Prophet ﷺ said these two verses, recited at night, will suffice the one who recites them.
Bismika rabbi wada'tu janbi, wa bika arfa'uh, fa-in amsakta nafsi farhamha, wa in arsaltaha fahfadhha, bima tahfadhu bihi 'ibadakas-salihin
“In Your name, my Lord, I lay down my side, and by You I raise it. If You take my soul, have mercy on it, and if You send it back, protect it as You protect Your righteous servants.”
Shake out your bed with the edge of your garment before lying down.
Allahumma innaka khalaqta nafsi wa anta tawaffaha, laka mamatuha wa mahyaha, in ahyaytaha fahfadhha, wa in amattaha faghfir laha. Allahumma inni as'alukal-'afiyah
“O Allah, You created my soul and You take it back. Its death and its life belong to You. If You keep it alive, protect it, and if You cause it to die, forgive it. O Allah, I ask You for well-being.”
Allahumma qini 'adhabaka yawma tab'athu 'ibadak
“O Allah, protect me from Your punishment on the Day You resurrect Your servants.”
The Prophet ﷺ would place his right hand under his cheek and say this three times.
Allahumma rabbas-samawatis-sab'i wa rabbal-ard, wa rabbal-'arshil-'adheem, rabbana wa rabba kulli shay', faliqal-habbi wan-nawa, wa munzilat-tawrati wal-injili wal-furqan, a'udhu bika min sharri kulli shay'in anta akhidhum binasiyatih. Allahumma antal-awwalu falaysa qablaka shay', wa antal-akhiru falaysa ba'daka shay', wa antadh-dhahiru falaysa fawqaka shay', wa antal-batinu falaysa dunaka shay', iqdi 'annad-dayna wa aghnina minal-faqr
“O Allah, Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the earth, Lord of the Mighty Throne, our Lord and the Lord of all things, who splits the seed and the date stone, who sent down the Torah, the Injil and the Furqan, I seek refuge in You from the evil of everything whose forelock You hold. O Allah, You are the First, and there is nothing before You. You are the Last, and there is nothing after You. You are the Manifest, and there is nothing above You. You are the Hidden, and there is nothing beyond You. Settle our debts for us and free us from poverty.”
Said lying on the right side.
Al-hamdu lillahil-ladhi at'amana wa saqana, wa kafana, wa awana, fakam mimman la kafiya lahu wa la mu'wi
“All praise belongs to Allah, who fed us and gave us drink, who sufficed us and gave us shelter. How many there are who have no one to suffice them and no one to shelter them.”
“O Allah, I have submitted my soul to You, entrusted my affairs to You, turned my face to You, and leaned my back on You, out of hope in You and fear of You. There is no refuge and no escape from You except to You. I believe in Your Book which You sent down, and in Your Prophet whom You sent.”
Make wudu, lie on your right side and let these be your last words. Whoever dies that night dies upon the fitrah.
