وَغَدَوْا۟ عَلَىٰ حَرْدٍۢ قَٰدِرِينَ

Waghadaw AAala hardin qadireen

"And they went early in determination, [assuming themselves] able."

قَالُواْ سُبْحَـنَ رَبّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَـلِمِينَ- فَأَقْبَلَ بَعْضُهُمْ عَلَى بَعْضٍ يَتَلَـوَمُونَ- قَالُواْ يوَيْلَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَـغِينَ- عَسَى رَبُّنَآ أَن يُبْدِلَنَا خَيْراً مّنْهَآ إِنَّآ إِلَى رَبّنَا رغِبُونَ- كَذَلِكَ الْعَذَابُ وَلَعَذَابُ الاْخِرَةِ أَكْبَرُ لَوْ كَانُواْ يَعْلَمُونَ-

С этим намерением они направились в сад, беседуя вполголоса и обсуждая, как же утаить то, что надлежит раздать во имя Аллаха. Они спешили, чтобы закончить сбор урожая до того, как соберутся люди, и решили не раздавать милостыни ни бедным, ни неимущим. Из-за своей жадности и алчности они шептались, опасаясь того, что кто-нибудь может услышать их и оповестить бедняков. Они поставили себя в гнусное положение. Бессердечные и лишенные сострадания, они твердо решили не раздавать предписанной Аллахом милостыни, будучи уверенными в своей силе и в своем могуществе.

Maʿārif al-Qur'ān

وَغَدَوْا عَلَىٰ حَرْ‌دٍ قَادِرِ‌ينَ And in early hours of the day they rushed quickly, while they were (assuming themselves) powerful (to pluck the fruits and prevent the poor.) [ 68:25] '. The word hard means 'to prevent' and 'to express anger'.5 In other words, they thought they had the power to pick the fruit for themselves and prevent the poor people from having a share in it, and even if they do come to the garden, the owners of the garden decided to chase them out.

(5). This word also means 'to rush quickly'. This meaning of the word has been adopted in the translation of the text. (Muhammad Taqi Usmani)
