مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلْمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلْحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوٓا۟ إِذًۭا مُّنظَرِينَ

Ma nunazzilu almala-ikata illabilhaqqi wama kanoo ithan munthareen

"We do not send down the angels except with truth; and they [i.e., the disbelievers] would not then be reprieved."

The Accusation that the Prophet was a Madman and Demands for Him to bring down Angels

Allah tells us about the disbelief, arrogance and stubbornness of the disbelievers as reflected in their words:

يأَيُّهَا الَّذِى نُزِّلَ عَلَيْهِ الذِّكْرُ

(O you (Muhammad) to whom the Dhikr (the Qur'an) has been revealed!) i.e., the one who claims to receive it.

إِنَّكَ لَمَجْنُونٌ

(Verily, you are a mad man!) i.e., by your invitation to us to follow you and leave the way of our forefathers.

لَّوْ مَا تَأْتِينَا بِالْمَلَـئِكَةِ

(Why do you not bring angels to us) i.e., to bear witness to the accuracy of what you have brought to us is true, if you are really telling the truth This is similar to what Pharaoh said:

فَلَوْلاَ أُلْقِىَ عَلَيْهِ أَسْوِرَةٌ مِّن ذَهَبٍ أَوْ جَآءَ مَعَهُ الْمَلَـئِكَةُ مُقْتَرِنِينَ

(Why then are not golden bracelets bestowed on him, or angels sent along with him)(43:53). And Allah said:

وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ لاَ يَرْجُونَ لِقَآءَنَا لَوْلاَ أُنزِلَ عَلَيْنَا الْمَلَـئِكَةُ أَوْ نَرَى رَبَّنَا لَقَدِ اسْتَكْبَرُواْ فِى أَنفُسِهِمْ وَعَتَوْا عُتُوّاً كَبِيراً - يَوْمَ يَرَوْنَ الْمَلَـئِكَةَ لاَ بُشْرَى يَوْمَئِذٍ لِّلْمُجْرِمِينَ وَيَقُولُونَ حِجْراً مَّحْجُوراً

(And those who do not expect a meeting with Us (i. e., those who deny the Day of Resurrection and the life of the Hereafter), say: "Why are not the angels sent down to us, or why do we not see our Lord" Indeed they think too highly of themselves, and are scornful with great pride. On the Day that they do see the angels - there will be no good news given on that day to the guilty. And they (angels) will say: "All kinds of glad tidings are forbidden for you.") (25:21-22) For this reason Allah said:

مَا نُنَزِّلُ الْمَلَـئِكَةَ إِلاَّ بِالحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُواْ إِذًا مُّنظَرِينَ

(We do not send the angels down except with the truth, and in that case, they (the disbelievers) would have no respite!) Mujahid said in this Ayah:

مَا نُنَزِّلُ الْمَلَـئِكَةَ إِلاَّ بِالحَقِّ

(We do not send the angels down except with the truth) "i.e., with the Message and the punishment." Then Allah, may He be exalted, stated that He is the One Who revealed the Dhikr to him, which is the Qur'an, and He is protecting it from being changed or altered.

Язычники, которые отвергли Пророка Мухаммада, да благословит его Аллах и приветствует, насмехались над ним и говорили: «Послушай! Ты считаешь, что тебе ниспосылается откровение. Неужели ты думаешь, что мы последуем за тобой и откажемся от дороги наших предков? Если ты так думаешь, то ты - всего лишь безумец. Но если ты говоришь правду, почему ты не привел к нам ангелов, которые подтвердили бы правдивость твоих слов? Ты не сделал этого, а это значит, что ты говоришь неправду». Эти слова многобожников были свидетельством величайшей несправедливости и величайшего невежества. Что касается их несправедливости, то она очевидна. Многобожники были настолько дерзки, что осмелились указывать Аллаху, какие знамения Ему следует ниспосылать. Они потребовали от Него знамений, которые Он не желал показывать рабам, потому что и без них людям было ниспослано множество знамений, свидетельствующих о правдивости пророческого учения. А что касается невежества многобожников, то оно проявлялось в неосведомленности о том, что может принести им пользу, а что - причинить вред. Пришествие ангелов не послужило бы им на благо, потому что ангелы приносят очевидную истину, после чего Аллах не предоставляет отсрочки тем, кто отказывается руководствоваться этой истиной или покориться ей. Если бы к ним явились ангелы, они все равно бы не уверовали, и тогда мучительное наказание постигло бы их без промедления. А это значит, что требования многобожников показать им ангелов были равносильны просьбам поскорее подвергнуть их суровому возмездию. Воистину, они не могли уверовать вопреки воле своего Господа, ибо только Он наставляет людей на прямой путь. Всевышний сказал: «Даже если бы Мы ниспослали им ангелов, и мертвые заговорили бы с ними, и Мы собрали бы перед ними все сущее, они ни за что не уверовали бы, если бы только этого не пожелал Аллах. Однако большинство их не ведает об этом» (6:111). Но если бы многобожники действительно желали найти истину, то они довольствовались бы этим великим Кораном. И поэтому далее Всевышний Аллах сказал:

Explanatory Notes

1. The word: الْحَقِّ (what is true) in: إِلَّا بِالْحَقِّ (ilia bi al-l aqq: translated as 'except with what is true' ) means the decision to send down punishment. Some commentators take them to be denoting the Qur’ an, or prophethood. In Bayan al-Qur'an, preference has been given to the first meaning which has been reported from al-Hasan al-Basri (رح) . Maulana Ashraf ` Ali Thanavi (رح) has explained these verses as given below.

And these disbelievers (of Makkah) said to the Holy Prophet ﷺ : "0 you to whom the Qur’ an has been revealed, (as you claim, then,) you are certainly (God forbid) insane (and your claim to prophethood is false, otherwise) why would you not bring the angels to us (who will testify your truthfulness before us - as in Surah Al-Furqan: لَوْلَا أُنزِلَ إِلَيْهِ مَلَكٌ فَيَكُونَ مَعَهُ نَذِيرً‌ا : 'Why is not an angel sent down unto him, to be a warner with him? [ 25:7] which is answered by Allah Ta’ ala:) We send down the angels (in the manner asked by them) only to enforce a decision (and had that been the case) then they would have been given no respite either (in fact, when they would have not believed even after their having come - as their ways guarantee - they would have been destroyed instantly, the reason for which has already appeared in the later verses of the first section of Surah Al-An’ am: 6:8, 9).
