How to face the qibla from Makkah

What the bearing means

325° from true north is a great-circle bearing, the shortest path along the surface of the earth between Makkah and the Kaaba in Makkah. For a Muslim in Makkah, the practical answer is simple: face the direction the compass tells you, with the small tolerance that classical Sunni fiqh allows. The Prophet ﷺ said: "What is between the east and the west is qibla" (Sunan at-Tirmidhi 342, hasan), for those distant from Makkah, exact precision to the degree was never required.

Travel duas for the journey to Makkah

• Boarding transport: Subhana-lladhi sakhkhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen, wa inna ila Rabbina la-munqaliboon. (Surah az-Zukhruf 43:13-14)
• Departure: Allahumma inna nas'aluka fi safarina hadha al-birra wa-t-taqwa, wa min al-amali ma tarda. (Sahih Muslim 1342)
• Arrival: A'udhu bi-kalimati-llahi-t-tammati min sharri ma khalaq. (Sahih Muslim 2708)
