How to separate Islam from culture
Respect Muslim cultures without treating every custom as religion
Ask what kind of claim you are hearing
- Is this stated clearly in the Quran?
- Is there an authentic teaching from the Prophet ﷺ?
- Is this a recognised scholarly interpretation?
- Is this a local custom that people find helpful?
- Is someone presenting a personal preference as a religious duty?
Difference is not always error
Established schools of Islamic law sometimes reach different rulings from the same evidence. That is different from inventing a rule. A trustworthy teacher can explain whether an issue is agreed upon, reasonably disputed, or simply cultural.
You do not need to copy another ethnicity to become a sincere Muslim. Keep what is good in your own culture and leave what conflicts with your faith.
Write down one rule someone told you recently. Ask them kindly for its source and whether recognised scholars differ about it.

Do I need to dress like Muslims from one country?
No. Islamic modesty has principles, while clothing styles vary widely. Clothing can remain culturally familiar if it meets those principles.
How do I know whether an online answer is reliable?
Look for named qualifications, clear evidence, awareness of scholarly disagreement, and accountability to a real institution or community.
