What does Fard mean?

فَرْض

Fard

Obligatory: an act whose doing is rewarded and whose leaving is a sin.

Also spelled: Wajib, Obligatory

Fard explained

Fard 'ayn is due from every individual, like the five prayers. Fard kifayah is due from the community, like the funeral prayer: if enough perform it, the rest are excused. The Hanafi school distinguishes fard from wajib by the strength of the evidence.
