Friday sermon outline

Procrastination and beginning while there is time

The soul waits for a cleaner schedule and a stronger mood. Revelation teaches us to begin with the time and strength already in our hands.

Surah ash-Sharh 94:7-8, Sahih al-Bukhari 6416

First khutbah

  1. 1

    Later is not a possession

The Prophet ﷺ told Ibn Umar to live in this world like a stranger or traveller. Ibn Umar would then advise people not to expect the evening when morning came, or morning when evening came (Bukhari 6416). Intention needs a present tense.

  2. 2

Finish, then turn to the next good

Allah says that when one task is finished, we should rise for another and direct our longing to Him (ash-Sharh 94:7-8). Momentum often arrives after action begins, not before it.

  3. 3

    Make the first step smaller

Do not wait to feel ready for a complete transformation. Pray the next prayer on time. Read the next page. Send the apology. Remove the first obstacle. A sincere small beginning is better than an impressive plan that never leaves the mind.

Second khutbah

After the brief sitting, return to the centrepiece and gather the message into one clear request. Remind the congregation that the point of this khutbah is not simply to understand procrastination and beginning while there is time, but to carry one honest change into the coming week.

Suggested closing

Name the good deed you keep postponing. Before this day ends, complete its smallest honest first step.

Prepare it in your own voice

  • Read each cited verse or hadith in full before using it.
  • Add one example that your own congregation will recognise.
  • End with one action people can realistically begin today.

Ammar ibn Yasir (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ called a man's long prayer and short khutbah a sign of his understanding (Sahih Muslim 869). Aim for fifteen to twenty minutes. Two sections separated by a brief sitting is the Sunnah pattern.
