Living for the akhirah

The believer's eyes are on the next life. Allah says: the next is better than the former. How to live the dunya knowing the akhirah is real.

Centrepiece
Surah ad-Duha 93:4, Surah al-Hadid 57:20

Outline

  1. 1

    Allah weighed them, He chose

The Prophet ﷺ said: by Allah, this world compared to the next is like one of you dipping a finger in the sea, then looking at what is on the finger (Muslim 2858). The proportion is set, not negotiable.

  2. 2

Building for the akhirah does not abandon the dunya

Allah says: do not forget your share of this world (Qasas 28:77). Work hard, earn halal, raise children, build communities. But know what you are working for. The dunya is the field, the akhirah is the harvest.

  3. 3

    Three deeds outlast you

Sadaqah jariyah, knowledge that benefits, a righteous child supplicating (Muslim 1631). Plant at least one of the three before the soul reaches the throat.

Closing line

What is one act today that you can begin which will keep producing reward after your name is on a stone?

Aisha (RA) reported: the Prophet's ﷺ khutbahs were of moderate length and his prayers were short (Sahih Muslim 869). Aim for fifteen to twenty minutes. Two sections separated by a brief sitting is the Sunnah pattern.
