Remembering death

The Prophet ﷺ said: remember often the destroyer of pleasures. Why dhikr al-mawt is not morbid but clarifying.

Centrepiece
Surah Aal-i-Imran 3:185, Sunan at-Tirmidhi 2307

Outline

  1. 1

    It clarifies what matters

The Prophet ﷺ said: remember often the destroyer of pleasures, death (Tirmidhi 2307, hasan). The point is not to live in fear, but to let the knowledge of the end sift the daily list of concerns. Most of what occupies us would not survive a five-minute memento mori.

  2. 2

    Every soul

'Every soul will taste death' (Surah Aal-i-Imran 3:185). The verse does not say most, or some. It says every. Every imam, every wealthy man, every sahabi. The only question is which deeds we ship before the bell rings.

  3. 3

    Visit graves

The Prophet ﷺ said: visit graves, for they remind you of the akhirah (Muslim 976). A monthly visit, ten minutes, is worth more than ten lectures on the topic.

Closing line

Allahumma ahsin khatimatana, O Allah, make our endings beautiful.

Ammar ibn Yasir (RA) reported that the Prophet ﷺ called a man's long prayer and short khutbah a sign of his understanding (Sahih Muslim 869). Aim for fifteen to twenty minutes. Two sections separated by a brief sitting is the Sunnah pattern.
