How to face the qibla from Colombo

Stand facing what your compass reads as 295° from true north. From Colombo, that's a north-west orientation. The number is calculated from true north. What the bearing means

295° from true north is a great-circle bearing, the shortest path along the surface of the earth between Colombo and the Kaaba in Makkah. It's not the same as the direction you'd see on a flat (Mercator) map, because the earth is curved. At long distances especially, the great-circle direction can look surprising on a flat projection.

For a Muslim in Colombo, the practical answer is simple: face the direction the compass tells you, with the small tolerance that classical Sunni fiqh allows. The Prophet ﷺ said: "What is between the east and the west is qibla" (Sunan at-Tirmidhi 342, hasan), for those distant from Makkah, exact precision to the degree was never required.
